Tay Textiles Ltd., said there would be 270 redundancies soon at two of their works. Dura Works is to close and production will be centred on Hillbank. Out of 500 employed in the two factories 175 will lose their jobs. The other 95 redundancies will occur at Bower Mill. Read more......
Alex Smith Stores Ltd are closing their 100 High Street, Lochee, branch tomorrow (Saturday). Mr Smith says bad planning split the Lochee shopping area and cut his trade by 75% Smiths' store has been in Lochee for 30 years. There are other branches in Commercial Street, Hilltown and Wellgate. 46 jobs will be lost when Yarrow Engineers (Glasgow) Ltd close their branch at Dundee Harbour on May 9th. The firm blames substantial trading losses and discouraging prospects for ship-repair work in Dundee. Yarrow came to the city just over a year ago. Read more......
The Dundee Bleachworks' plant at Pitkerro Road, Midmill, owned by William Watson (Dundee) Ltd., is closing at the end of March. Seventy jobs will be lost. The import of cheaper-priced carpets from abroad is blamed for the closure. Read more......
The city's worse snowfall for several years practically paralysed Dundee on Sunday. Many vehicles were stuck in deep drifts and the buses were withdrawn early in the afternoon. More snow fell intermittently during the week but this morning (Friday), heavy rain was washing much of it away, although roads on the outskirts were still under deep slush. Read more......
