To the long list of tragedies which have marked the opening of the year in Dundee there was added last night what appears to be a murder of the most brutal kind. The victim was Peter Cooney, 64 years of age, a quarry worker who resided at 68, Ann Street and whose head was battered in by some person unknown, who used as the weapon of attack a quart beer bottle. So rapid has been the progress in the construction of the new tramway line from Fairmuir to Downfield that it is expected early next week cars will be able to run out of the terminus at Baldovan Road. Work began on 5th September and when it is considered that there has been a good deal of broken time, and that the workmen had to be employed paring the roadway from side to side, it will be conceded that the work has been pushed through with expedition. Dundee suffragettes had a preliminary skirmish on Wednesday in the Gilfillan Memorial Hall, when the "fiery cross" summoning all the faithful to Saturday's great demonstration in Edinburgh, was sent round by the leaders of the movement. Miss Husband presided and she was accompanied by on the platform Mrs Despard, Mrs F.W. Pethwick Lawrence, Mrs Billington-Grieg, Miss Christabel Pankhurst all of whom are connected with the Women's Social and Political Union and Miss Wilkie, secretary of the local branch. Arrangements were made on Tuesday at a meeting of the local branch of the Women's Social and Political Union for the holding of a demonstration in Dundee early next month, in which such well-known suffragettes as Mrs Despard, Mrs Philip Snowdon, Mrs Billington-Greig and Miss Christabel Pankhurst are to take part.
