Dundee suffragettes had a preliminary skirmish on Wednesday in the Gilfillan Memorial Hall, when the "fiery cross" summoning all the faithful to Saturday's great demonstration in Edinburgh, was sent round by the leaders of the movement. Miss Husband presided and she was accompanied by on the platform Mrs Despard, Mrs F.W. Pethwick Lawrence, Mrs Billington-Grieg, Miss Christabel Pankhurst all of whom are connected with the Women's Social and Political Union and Miss Wilkie, secretary of the local branch. The gentlemen on the platform were Rev. Walter Walsh, Mr Robert Cameron, M.P. Durham and Mr Robert Stirton. The audience was chiefly composed of elderly ladies and a sprinkling of the sterner sex some of whom at intervals indicated that they looked upon the lighter side of the question. The opening was not marked by extreme punctuality and impatience of even the feminine section of the audience was demonstrated bt considerable stamping of feet.
The Discovery, built in Dundee for Antarctic exploration purposes, which arrived in London from Hudson Bay on Friday last has been participating in the present record-breaking craze. In view of the fact that the Discovery had its birth in Dundee, the achievement of the vessel is of considerable interest. The Discovery made the voyage from London to Hudson Bay and back in three months and eight days, breaking the previous record by no fewer than twelve days.
In the West of Fife this fine performance will also create interest as the Captain of the Discovery, Captain J.G. Ford belongs to and reside when on land at Torryburn. The previous record of three months, twenty days was also held by Captain Ford, a record which beat one established for a period of twenty years. Captain Ford made the double voyage without mishap to crew or vessel.
