To the long list of tragedies which have marked the opening of the year in Dundee there was added last night what appears to be a murder of the most brutal kind. The victim was Peter Cooney, 64 years of age, a quarry worker who resided at 68, Ann Street and whose head was battered in by some person unknown, who used as the weapon of attack a quart beer bottle.Circumstances of the most mysterious character surround the whole affair but late last night the police secured a clue which may lead to apprehension at any moment. The police in the course of their investigation made a sensational discovery which may lead to the capture of the assailant. Mrs Milne, who stays next door to the deceased, found in her house a light overcoat and a cap which belonged to none of her family. She reported the circumstances to the police and John Cooney son of the deceased then remembered that he had picked up these articles in his father's house but in the excitement had forgotten all about them. The clothing was the property of neither his father nor himself and he was unconscious of every having seen them before. The discovery was most important and the detectives devoted their attention to the following up of the clue.
Inquiries elicited that a man possessing a coat of the kind described had been observed by some grocers' messengers in the neighbourhood. In the first instance he was observed to leave the close and not long afterwards was noticed returning with the coat over his arm. Subsequently he was seen leaving the place minus the coat. Following up this line of investigation the police learned that the mysterious visitor had departed wearing the dead man's cap, in his haste having apparently mistaken it for his own.
Land to the further extent of five acres having been levelled and covered with soil at the Esplanade, it is proposed to add this area to the part already reclaimed and to hand it over to the parks department making six and and a half acres completed under the present Esplanade extension.

The restart after the New Year holidays took place in Dundee on Monday. In the various mills and factories the resumption was general and satisfactory the number of absentees being relatively small. At the shipyards however the experience was totally different. Only some six employees of Dundee Ship Building Company put in an appearance while those who turned up at the Caledonian Yard were unable to start in consequence of the repairs on the boiler not having been completed. A number of labourers however resumed work. Messrs Gourlay's yard was entirely closed down.
