Dundee Honours Sir Alfred Ewing
"This is the crowning honour of my life"
With these words Sir James Alfred Ewing yesterday accepted the freedom of Dundee. Sir Alfred spoke of his gratitude to his parents and his native city. The dangers that modern scientific progress might hold for civilisation could be fought, he said, with the principles of "truth, equity and unselfishness, which as small boys we learned at our Mother's knee". Dundee Old Town House Bells
Dr Leighton, rector of Morgan Academy Dundee, has made a request to the Corporation Works Department for one of the bells from the Old Town House. If his request is granted he intends having the bell placed in the clock tower at Morgan. About half a dozen of these bells, the chimes of which were familiar to generations of Dundonians are at present lying in the works department yard. Convener John Phin will ask the Works Committee tonight to consider Dr Leighton's request and to decide what is to be done with the bells. Read more......

New School to Cost £9915
The Education Committee of Dundee Town Council yesterday approved of plans for the errection of a new Episcopal school in Marryat Street, at a cost of £9915 and for the reconstruction of Butterburn School at a cost of £6300. The reconstruction of Butterburn School will not give room for any additional pupils, but will modernise the building internally. The new School in Marryat Street will replace the existing St Martin's Episcopal School. Read more......

Whale at Mouth of Tay
A large whale is reported to have been seen in the vicinity of the Bell Rock. It is stated to be over forty feet in length and of the same species as the one washed up ashore recently at Kinshaldy. Read more......
