Dundee and Broughty Tramways

Operations in connection with the construction of the tramway between Dundee and Monifieth will shortly begin at West Ferry and materials for that purpose is being collected at the site in Dundas Street, Broughty Ferry purchased originally for an electric staion.  Cargoes of cement are also being discharged at Broughty Ferry and stored in the yard of Mr Nicoll who had obtained the carting contract. It is understood that the tramway company are to pay at the rate of £52 per annum for the use of Dundas Street ground. Read more......

East End Library Opens

Tow HouseThe book lending department of Arthurstone Branch Free Library was formally opened last night by ex-Lord Provost Hunter. The company included the Marquess of Tullibardine, Mr David Air, Bailie Martin, ex-Bailie Mathers, ex-Bailie Melville, Mr William High, Mr James Gordon, Mr James Thomson and Mr John Maclauchlan, the Librarian. Dundee Volunteers Group March

WeighhouseThe 1st (City of Dundee) Volunteer Batallion of the Black Watch held a route march through the city on Saturday. The members assembled under the command of Colonel Howard Hill in Parker Square. There was a fairly large attendance fully 300 being on parade. Read more......

"A Nymph" in Ancrum Road

Albert InstituteA disgraceful scene was witnessed in Ancrum Road on Saturday forenoon. Shortly after 11am, Constable Paton observed a woman running about that thoroughfare in a semi-nude condition. She was perfectly mad with drink, and was cursing and swearing, using the most offensive language. Read more......

Blackness LibraryDuring the late hours of Saturday and through-out Sunday a gale of considerable severity was experienced in Dundee and district. Commencing in squalls of some violence, which warned the spratters lying in the Tidal Basin to make everything secure, the breeze gradually freshened till the early hours of Sunday when it reached the force of a hurricane. Read more......

New Dundee Pleasure Steamer

Building of the Caird HallThe new Dundee pleasure steamer 'Advance' arrived in the Tidal Harbour from Montrose on Tuesday. The 'Advance' which presents a very smart appearance, has been built by Montrose Shipbuilding Company for Mr James Tares, the owner of the 'Bonnie Dundee' and it is to take the place of this steamer in the pleasure sailing on the Tay. The 'Advance' was towed to Dundee by Montrose tug 'Rapid', and is berthed in the King William Dock. Read more......

Perseverance Lodge

CowgateThe weekly meeting of the Perseverance Lodge was held on Thursday when Brother Gray, presided over a full meeting, and initiated three new candidates. Brother Hogg, then in a suitable manner, presented Sister Menzies and Brother Mason, members of the lodge with a lovely tea set as a token of goodwill and esteem from the lodge on the occasion of their approaching marriage. Read more......
