Never Stay Off School Again

I was born on 27th January 1936 and lived at 45 Cotton Road, Dundee. I went to St Mary's Forebank School and then to St John's Secondary School in Tay Street.

I left school at fifteen years of age and went to work in Keiller's in Albert Square where I stayed for the next four years till I got married. I went back there after I had my first child.

I remember when I was about 10 or 11 years old I stayed off school with my friend who was going to the doctor's. I went without my mother's knowing about it. When we went on the tram a man asked us why we were not at school. My friend told him she was going to the doctor's and I was going with her. The man was a school attendance officer and he took our names and which school we were at. I got such a fright - I never did that again. I will always remember that tram ride.
