The book lending department of Arthurstone Branch Free Library was formally opened last night by ex-Lord Provost Hunter. The company included the Marquess of Tullibardine, Mr David Air, Bailie Martin, ex-Bailie Mathers, ex-Bailie Melville, Mr William High, Mr James Gordon, Mr James Thomson and Mr John Maclauchlan, the Librarian. There was also a large gathering of the general public.Ex-Lord Provost Hunter said he regretted the absence of Lord Provost Barrie, but at the same time it afforded him great pleasure to take the Chief Magistrate's place, especially on such an occasion as this.
Some time ago the reading department of the Library was opened, and now they were to open the lending department. Only those who had to do with the organisation of libraries knew the immense amount of work entailed. The Librarian and his assistants had had to work not merely eight or even ten hours a day but day and night in order to get things ready for the selection of books, for which they were indebted to the Selection Committee, of which Mr John Robertson. Elmsea, was the Chairman, and Mr Kinnison had also given much assistance. There were 7300 books in the Library and he hoped residenters would take advantage of the splendid opportunities offered by reading. Reading from such a Library was a cheap pleasure.
Much had been said about the halfpenny that had been put on the rates for Library, but as many families get the use of the books for less than a shilling a year, it was not a very serious matter after all. He had much pleasure in declaring the lending department open.
Mr Hunter then took out the first book and in view of his recent return from a holiday in Spain, he appropriately selected "Modern Spain" of the story of the Nations' Series. Mr Mathers took the second book , which was Sala's "A Journey South".
In Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday Sheriff Campbell Smith disposed of a number of cased involving contraventions of the Margarine Act, 1887. The dealers accused admitted the charge, which in each case was to the effect that margarine in the respective shops was not properly labelled as such. Agents who appeared for the grocers lodged a technical objection to the complaint on the ground that the summonses were not returnable until 14 days after they had been served, whereas the accused were ordered to appear before the Court 11 or 12 days after receiving the documents. His Lordship overruled the objection, remarking that the question raised was nice and difficult, but not worth softening one's brains about, especially since the men were present. Mr H. Carlton, who represented one of the accused said that grocers were now being persecuted, not prosecuted. A small fine was imposed in each case.

On Tuesday evening a rather sensational incident involving considerable danger to the passengers in one of the compartments, occurred on a train while approaching Dundee. The 6.10pm train from Barnhill to the city had just past the Stannergate when a stone was thrown into the compartment in which three Dundee gentleman were travelling. The window of the carraige was down at the time and striking the frame of the door, the stone bounded against the partition of the compartment whence rebounding against it struck one of the gentlemen in the face. By this time however the force of the missile was spent, else more than a bruise would be likely.
On arrival at East Station the occurrence was reported to the railway authorities who notified the police, but by the time the latter had arrived on the spot where the incident happened the offenders, who are supposed to be boys had decamped.
