Two of Dundee's noted citizens are to have buildings named after them. The new Lincraig branch library due to open to the public in February is to be named after Mid Craigie poet and songwriter Mary Brooksbank, who died in 1978 at the age of 80. The £250,000 sports hall extension to Kirkton Park Pavilion will be named after Dick McTaggart who won a boxing gold medal at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
Police roadblocks ringed Invergowrie on the outskirts of Dundee, for a spell last night after a man armed with a handgun held up the sub-post office and escaped with about £700. It was the second post office raid in the area yesterday - following a break-in at Wormit sub-post office on the opposite bank of the Tay overnight, and the third in just over a week, with Gauldry sub-post office, about three miles away, being the target of a similar raid.
In the two Fife incidents thieves escaped with a total haul of over £10,000. The armed robbery at Invergowrie occurred about 5.30pm as postmaster Alan Lowden, his wife Elma and Assistant Mrs Nan Alexander were preparing to close. A man wearing a motor cyclist helmet burst into the shop, threw a haversack on the counter and demanded it be filled with money. It is believed the man pointed the gun at Mrs Alexander and ordered Mr Lowden to fill the haversack. After the money had been piled into the baf from the safe, the gunman warned them not to try any funny business, saying he had an accomplice at the back of the Post Office. He then took the bag and ran out of the shop without checking to see if there was any more money in the safe.
Local man Mr Willie Campbell said he saw a youth answering the description in the street outside the post office before 5.30pm. He is described at being between 18 and 20, 5ft. 10in. to 6ft and of good build. He was wearing a blue, full-face crash helmet, blue trousers and blue overalls. He also had on blue training shoes with a white band and was carrying a khaki haversack.
Rumours widely circulating in Dundee over the past few days of mass lay-off at Times were confirmed yesterday with the announcements that 1300 workers are to be idle for a month over Christmas and the New Year. But the news, in line with Timex lay-offs worldwide in the watch-making department, may not herald too bleak festive cheer.
It is thought the main union involved A.U.E.W., may have reached some arrangement with management concerning a certain amount of protection of wages. The announcement means almost certainly that the watch-making facility at the Milton of Craigie plant will shut down completely for four weeks.
In a statement the company said "The Timex Corporation has announced that, in order to bring production into line with requirements, employees in watch operations in Dundee will be temporarily laid off from December 10th until January 10th. This temporary shut down of watch operations results from a continuing demand for watch products due to the world recession and changing technology causing inventory build-up of parts and finished watches. New business operations in Dundee, as well as certain support operations, distribution, repair and services and maintenance are not affected by this shut down. Lay-off arrangements are currently being discussed with the A.U.E.W.

Dundee United are already making arrangements for the U.E.F.A. tie in Prague on March 2nd against Bohemians. The Possibility of a charter flight is being investigated, As they have been informed the probable kick-off time will be 5pm (4pm our time) an ideal arrangement would be to fly home directly after the match instead of the usual Thursday departure. This is a procedure being adopted more by clubs and by the S.F.A.
