The Christmas spirits of many Dundee families are dampened this weekend. The North British Linoleum Co., Ltd., Clepington Road, have been forced to put its workers on short time next week. This follows the similar move by the Dundee Linoleum Co., South Road, Lochee, who have been on a four-day week since November 30.
Officials of both companies said yesterday they are confident that this is only a seasonable fluctuation.
Despite the slight depression in the linoleum trade in recent years, they are not unduly worried about the future.
No Skin – Keep pouring custard hot in a vacuum and no skin forms on the top.
Mrs Connelly, Peddie Street.
Extra Table – An ironing board makes a handy extra table when you are giving a party. Cover it with an attractive cloth. Mrs Penman, Dunfermline.
Cloudy Glass – When cut-glass ware is cloudy and ordinary washing does not remover the film, fill the glass with wet potato peelings and let it stand for 24 hours. When washed it will then sparkle like new. Mrs Hawthorne, Romford.
The City Square lights will be switched on and the Christmas tree in place on Tuesday. The whole effect promises to be better than ever, and this year the pillars of the Caird Hall will be floodlit in colour.
On Thursday a week long programme of Christmas carols begins, ending with the Dundee Choral Union’s “Messiah” on December 27.
This programme is one of the most ambitious undertaken in the city. Churches, both Protestant and Catholic, have combined with youth fellowships and the Salvation Army in a magnificent effort worthy of the Christmas spirit.
Just over three weeks ago, the Rev. Peter Gordon, of Camperdown Church was asked if the church would accept the gift of a Hammond organ. The offer was sweet music to Mr Gordon’s ears, for the new church only had a small harmonium.
Mr Gordon accepted the offer and was told to go to Messrs Larg & Sons, Ltd, Whitehall Street.
And a new Hammond organ was installed last week and dedicated on Sunday.
“The donor wishes to remain anonymous,” said Mr Gordon, “The only condition attached to the gift is that if Camperdown Church should decide at any time to install a pipe organ, then the Hammond organ will go to a future Church extension charge”.
An early-morning worker says Thursday provided his coldest start to a day for years. Before leaving his home in Broughty just after six o’clock he had to de-ice the windows inside his car. He managed to keep the windscreen clear by wiping frequently with a cloth soaked in meth – until he reached Harecraig. Then a pattern took the place of visibility. The glass had iced up outside!
Braking hard, the motorist found himself in the middle of the road. Out came the meth, and he continued his journey to town – until the spirits froze on the wind-screen. Twice more he had to stop before reaching Dundee, numb to the marrow.
The ten minute run had taken half an hour and half a pint of meth!
