Wellgate Centre's Opening Success

Wellgate CentreThe opening day of the Wellgate Centre in Dundee was heralded by hundreds of people milling about the landscaped areas, with not a seat to be had.

From a commercial and a public relations point of view yesterday's first day was an unqualified success. For, on a day that Dundonians took the new shopping complex to their hearts, the developers announced that over 80 per cent of lettable floor space has already been taken.

£2 Million Library

When Dundee's £2 million library in the Wellgate opens its doors towards the end of the year it will contain one of the country's largest and most up-to-date stock of books.

If furnishing costs are anything to go by it will also be one of Scotland's most luxurious libraries. With the final accounting still to be done, the cost of fitting out the premises is running at about £300,000. Much of this is being spent on shelving and tables and chairs etc.

Bright but Cold Spring Holiday

Dundee's Spring holiday yesterday was sunny but chilly. The city and its surrounding areas escaped the snow which affected much of the North of Scotland.

But the doubtful weather in the North did not deter those who had booked on coach tours of the Highlands.

Watson's Tour and Travel, 123 Overgate, reported that they had three buses leaving for Oban, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

In the afternoon, buses left for Loch Earn, Strathyre, Callander, Aberfeldy, Loch Tummel and Pitlochry.

A British Rail spokesman said that trains were busy. Many people were going to Edinburgh while Glasgow was also a popular destination.

Many travellers were taking advantage of British Rail's usual trip to York.

Another Gang Show Spectacular

Dundee Scout Association launched another Gang Show spectacular at the Whitehall Theatre last night. Enthusiasm overflowed from the stage - and the talent was tremendous. A packed programme with the customary superb grand finale, massed voices belting out chorus after chorus and closing with the perennial roof-lifted "We're Riding Along the the Crest of a Wave". Viva the Gang Show.

Do's and Don'ts in Furniture Care

Cabinet furniture

    * don't put hot plates or dishes on a piece of furniture
    * don't put warm wet cups or stand anything hot on a damp mat on a surface
    * don't allow cold water to remain on the surface
    * don't spill alcoholic drinks or spirit hair laquer, perfume etc.
    * don't stand furniture too close to a radiator

Beds

    * don't make a habit of sitting on the edge of the bed, this may weaken the edge springing
    * don't let children bounce on the bed. This is bad for the mattress but, more important, they could fall off and hurt themselves!
    * don't smoke in bed, it is one of the most common causes of fire accidents in the home.

Found Staggering in Water

Two young men, who early on Sunday morning were found shouting and staggering about in the water at the Esplanade, Broughty Ferry appeared at Dundee District Court yesterday.

Mr B and Mr M, pleaded guilty to a charge of conducting themselves in a disorderly manner and were each fined £10 with 21 days to pay.

The Depute Fiscal said both had been drinking.

Top of the Pops

The race for Number One is on in "Top of the Pops". Suzie Quatro and Paul McCartney's Wings appear to be the main contenders, with Blondie stuck on the second spot. I've a feeling their simple, catchy, repetitive melody could swing it for Wings - with a little luck. But the show stopper was an up-tempo, updated version of 'Singing in the Rain' from an energetic young lady called Sheila B. Devotion.
