Fleming Memorial

Baxter Park TerraceA memorial to the beneficence of Mr Robert Fleming is to be errected by Dundee Town Council at the entrance of the Fleming housing scheme.

The committee entrusted with the task of choosing a suitable design met on Thursday and examined various schemes. They selected a design which is to be carried out in synthetic stone with brick piers and wrought-iron grille infillings. A panel of British granite will bear a bronze plate on which will appear an inscription relating to the scheme of the donor. The choice of wording of the inscription was rremitted to a sub-committee.

W.R.I Rally At Dundee

Great interest was taken in the rally held by the Forfarshire Women's Rural Institute held in the Training College Hall, Dundee on Saturday.

This was the first occasion upon which the federation had engaged in an indoor function and the hall was filled to capacity with institute members and the general public.

The rally took the form of an entertainment in which six institutes were represented. Choir singing, three one-act plays and country dancing figured in the programme.

Dundee Boxing Contest

A boxing contest promoted by Mr Thomas Nicoll drew a good crowd to Nelson Sprots Ground, Nelson Street, Dundee on Wednesday.

The chief item on the programme was a ten-round bout between F.Parks and J. Cowie. After a keen fight, which went the full distance, Cowie gained the verdict on points.

Another 10 round contest between M. Malone and J. Cooney resulted in a narrow win for Cooney.

In a six-round bout J.Boag defeated Chris Small on points.

Giant Cauliflower

A giant cauliflower has been grown by Mr John McMurtie, 12, Forthill Drive, Broughty Ferry. It weighs 15lb, the leaves being 8lb and the heart 7lb. The flower is 45 inches in circumference and 16 inches in diameter.

First Aid To The Injured

Hillside Works Ambulance Section - A series of lectures on "First Aid To The Injured" will be given by Dr Geo. Rankine in Hillside works hall, Hilltown ( opposite Plaza Theatre) commencing on Tuesday 29th September at 8pm. All interested invited. New members enrolled.

Gingerbread

The children will be the better of this wholesome cake at teatime.<br>
Take 1lb flour and mix in 2 teaspoonfuls of ground ginger, 2 teaspoonfuls cinnamon, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate soda, 6oz sugar. Melt the butter in a ½lb of golden syrup. Have 6oz currants well washed and dried, 3oz candied peel finely chopped and add to the dry ingredients. Add the syrup milk and ½ teacupful of milk and 3 well-beaten eggs. Put in a steady moderate oven and bake.
