At a meeting of Dundee District Council last night (Thurs), proposals which will see the disappearance of the present civic amenities division were discussed in private. The upshot of the debate was that the department is to be reorganised. In its place will be three separate departments - Parks, Cultural Services and Leisure & Recreation.
Tourism will move in with the Industry Unit. The new setup will have a total of 27 posts compared with the present 30 although it appears unlikely this will lead to redundancies.

Dundee District Council Parks Committee decided unanimously on Wednesday night to end a "gentlemen's agreement" reached with the University 14 years ago concerning the exchange of playing field facilities at Riverside Drive and Downfield. Convener Mr Phil Grubb said the question had been "on the books" since 1968 and things had changed at Riverside Park since then. He was not, however, saying the Committee would not be willing to listen to any proposals the University brought forward. Mr Charles Farquhar said the University was at present using 14 acres of ground at Riverside owned by the District Council for which there was no formal lease or agreement on rent or rates. The University playing fields at Downfield were a very valuable site in terms of potential development.

Uncertainty appears to surround the future of the ship repair operations of the Dundee based Kestrel Marine Group. Although the offshore fabrication side of Kestrel has been successful in recent times, it seems work for the ship repair subsidiary has fallen off. It is understood union-management talks have been taking place over recent weeks concerning proposals for the possible closure of the ship repair side of the Kestrel operations in Dundee due to lack of orders. Over 100 employees could be effected.
