Mystery Smell

Arbroath RoadScottish Gas Board fitters searched the centre of Dundee last night for the source of a mystery smell, reported from many quarters as an extensive gas leak.People coughed and spluttered in the streets and wrinkled their noses as they sat in cinemas. In the Caird Hall jazz fans and artists complained of the smell. Complaints poured into policemen, managements and the Gas Board.

But the trouble turned out not to be gas after all. It was a "blowback" of an ammoniacal discharge from the gas works through the sewer system. And said Gas Board Manager Mr Wm. S Johnston, "There is no danger of an explosion or of anyone being seriously affected. An amount of ammoniacal liquor from the gasworks is normally discharged into the sewers and into the river on the ebb of the tide. It appears that a greater quantity than usual has been passed today, and hadn't been cleared in the out-fall sewer at the turn of the tide. This has the result of sending some of the discharge back into the sewers causing the smell throughout the City Centre".

Uses for Vinegar

A little vinegar added to the water used for washing floors softens the water and prevents a scum forming. This makes easy cleaning and the floors are easier to polish. A little vinegar used in the water for cleaning windows will make the dirt come off more easily and help to keep the flies away.
