Dundee and Broughty Tramways
Preparing for the Start
Operations in connection with the construction of the tramway between Dundee and Monifieth will shortly begin at West Ferry and materials for that purpose is being collected at the site in Dundas Street, Broughty Ferry purchased originally for an electric staion. Cargoes of cement are also being discharged at Broughty Ferry and stored in the yard of Mr Nicoll who had obtained the carting contract. It is understood that the tramway company are to pay at the rate of £52 per annum for the use of Dundas Street ground.
Essay Competition
A gold medal and prize of £5 is offered by the trustees under Sir John Leng's deed of trust for the best essay to be written by boys and girls not less than 15 and not more than 18 years of age , attending or who have attended any public school in Dundee, The subject of the essay will be:-
"The Sources of Power In Nature Available For Practical Purposes"
The competition will be held in the Examination Hall of University College, Dundee in September. Intending competitors should send in their names to the secretaries:

Band Concert for East Poorhouse
With the view of affording entertainment to and brightening the lives of the inmates of the children's and lunatic wards in the east poorhouse, Mr Anderson the Convener of the Entertainments Committee, is taking steps to arrange for a series of concerts to be given in that institution. At a meeting of the Entertainments Committee on Monday, Mr Anderson made a report on the subject and stated that the bandmasters with whom he had communicated had appeared to favourably regard the scheme.
