Big sugar cargo for Russia - Dundee is to have a new export trade, the consignment of refined sugar to Russia. The first consignment of 3000 tons from the Second Anglo-Scottish Sugar Beet Corporation, Cupar will be loaded for shipment this week. A vessel will arrive tomorrow by which time the dockers' and stevedores' holidays will be over.

The possibility of the extension of Butterburn School in the near future had led the Housing Committee of the Town Council to give off ground, extending to about a half acre on the site between Strathmartine Road and Moncur Crescent. The matter was discussed on Monday at a meeting of representatives of the Housing and Education Committee.
One cannot but notice the considerable number of men and boys in Dundee who are discarding their headgear. Principally amongst the latter this fashion already has a considerable following. Unless he specially wishes to wear his school cap, the schoolboy introduces a rather "free and easy" touch to the city streets. Amongst older men, too there are quite a number who are beginning to appear bareheaded, though not so many as the business man cannot do without his hat. It gives him completeness.

Dundee has always been a food circus town. Long before other Scottish centres had a permanent circus Dundee had a splendid building with regulation ring, stage and three galleries. Quaglini, Newsome and Cooke all had permanent circuses in Dundee. Next month the finest circus in Europe is coming to Tayside, indicating that the proprietors have faith in Dundee as a first-class circus city.
"Just a week too early" was Dundee's verdict on Tuesday on the heatwave in which the city sweltered from morning until night. The temperature touched 78 degrees to equal the previous hottest day of this year, Sunday 10th July. Unlike that day however, the all too compelling call of work prevented the majority of the citizens from making a dash to the coast and country.
A number of Dundee breeders gained successes at the Caledonian Canine Society's show in Edinburgh on Wednesday. In the cocker spaniel section D. MacDonald scored in the special limit and open dog classes, while E.D Hobson was a prominent winner for Alsatian wolfdogs, J. Duncan led with his puppy cairn terrier bitch, as did T.F Cargill, Broughty Ferry for a brace of wired fox terriers.
Last week I told you exclusively that Dundee United would appoint Johnny Hart, an old Tannadice favourite as trainer of the club. The appointment was made at a meeting of the Directors yesterday afternoon.
Hart was selected from a big list of applicants, which included a famous trainer, at president in America.
