Pope Leo XIII passed away peacefully at four minutes past four on Monday (20th July) afternoon, surrounded by the Leading Cardinals and the members of the Pontificial Court. The illness which commenced on Friday the 3rd inst., took a decided change for the worse on Saturday last, and the Pope became gradually but distinctly weaker on Sunday. A grave change became observable at half-past eleven on Monday forenoon and from that time he never rallied.

Dundee and district was on Monday visited by two thunderstorms - one within six hours of the other. The first disturbance occurred between two and three o'clock and was accompanied by torrential rains. The morning broke promisingly but by nine o'clock heavy black clouds crept up from the west, and the sky rapidly became overcast. Then followed what seemed little less than a cloud burst. For ten minutes there was a terrific downpour of rain and hail, and in the midst of it several vivid flashes of lightening and loud pearls of thunder. The storm was sharp, but short and, the clouds rolling by rapidly, the sun burst through and the weather became bright and genial.

Claim against local spinner - in Dundee Sheriff Court on Thursday, Sheriff Campbell Smith issued his decision in an action raised by John Minor Manry, accountant, New York against Mr D Mills, Spinner, Rosebank Street, Dundee, in which damages amounting to £1592 5s were sued for in respect of alleged failure on the part of the defender to fulfil a large proportion of a contract for 900,000 yards of cotton bagging. The action was defended on the grounds that the pursuer was not entitled to sue, and that the defender was prevented from implementing the contract on account of fires, breakages of machinery and strikes. In his interlocutor his Lordship finds that the pursuer has failed to set forth and support by documents any prima facie or relevant or sustainable evidence of his title to sue. He therefore dismisses the action and finds the pursuer liable to expenses, modified to seven guineas.
