During the late hours of Saturday and through-out Sunday a gale of considerable severity was experienced in Dundee and district. Commencing in squalls of some violence, which warned the spratters lying in the Tidal Basin to make everything secure, the breeze gradually freshened till the early hours of Sunday when it reached the force of a hurricane. The wind, which was westerly, continued till early evening yesterday, when it moderated considerably. So far as could be ascertained little or no damage was done, though one of the Broughty Ferry fishing boats - The Grace, belonging to Thomas Gall - broke her moorings and was driven onto the rocks near Broughty Ferry harbour and wrecked. Owing to the force of the gale, too, several of the sprat boats which left the harbour in the morning had to return in the afternoon. The Harbour Master yesterday morning received the following telegram from the Meteorological Office in London:- "Lower North and hoist South cone".

Discovery, Terra Nova & Morning For Sale.
Since her return from the Antarctic the Discovery has been lying in East India Dock "for sale". She is not yet sold. Anyone anxious for polar expedition have now the wide choice of three ships, all veterans in ice work.
The relief ships of the expedition towards the South Pole - the Terra Nova and The Morning - have also been placed on the market by Admiralty. The Discovery is of course, the pick of the bunch. She is a new ship and was designed and built for her work, The Terra Nova has a long record as a Steam Whaler, The Morning is the smallest vessel but the oldest and most experienced. She is a Norweigian Whaler built in 1871. She attracted great attention at the docks because of the "Crows Nest" on her main mast, perhaps the first seen in London since the whalers moved to Dundee.
Last night the Dundee Slum Corps of the Salvation Army distributed in their hall in Overgate, a number of garments and toys, gifted by charitable Dundee people to poor children. The distribution was superintended by Captain Norbury and the children were greatly delighted with the gifts.
Case Remitted for Trial
Counsel were heard on Thursday in the First Division of the Court of Session in a reclaiming note for pursuer in the action by Mrs Flora Clark Or Glenlees, 1044 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, against the Royal Hotel Co. Ltd, in which the pursuer sued for £1000 as damages for the death of her son, William. On the 8th April last Greenlees, who was a commercial traveller, was staying in the hotel. At night he was on his way to his bedroom, and the attendant opened the door of the lift. It was dark but Greenlees thought that the gift was in its place and stepped forward. It was not there and he fell down the well, and sustained fatal injuries.
In the Outer House Lord Low in the Procedure Roll found the action irrelevant and dismissed it with expenses. The first Division unanimously recalled the decision found the action relevant, approved the issue for trial and sent the case back to the Lord-Ordinary to try.
New Year humour seems to have been in abundance during the past week. At one of the railway stations the other evening a man carrying a small terrier was seen rushing about the platform, whistling vigorously - for the dog!
