AIDS in Tayside

Boots CornerThe virus responsible for the spread of the killer disease AIDS has reached Tayside. Two men, believed to be from the Dundee area, were diagnosed this week as being infected with HTLV3, the medical tag for the virus.

Both men - the health board will not give any details, which might identify them - are thought to be drug users and medical sources admit that the drug taking community, particularly in Dundee, are now most at risk.

What is perhaps alarming is that the two AIDS carriers have not been put in hospital because neither shows symptoms of developing the disease. However, the health board stressed last night that known contacts of the men would be followed up and appropriate advice given "to try to limit the spread of infection".

SKOL Cup Spotlight

Dundee's Close Call
The city clubs had mixed fortunes in the third-round draw of the Skol Cup. Dundee United have a home tie against Clydebank, but Dundee are drawn at Hamilton,

However there is great incentive for the Dark Blues to get a victory at Douglas Park, with the winners at home to either Forfar or Rangers in the fourth round.

If United defeat Clydebank, they will be at home again, to Morton or St Mirren in the fourth round.

Jim Gets His Man

Dundee United pipped neighbours Dundee and Hibs to secure the £70,000 transfer of Ian Redford from Rangers. Ian, transferred by Dundee to Ibrox in 1980 for £210,000, was first spotted by manager Jim McLean when he was playing with Errol Rovers about 12 years ago.

So the United supremo has had a long wait to get his man. But in what position? Jim McLean is keeping that a secret until nearer kick-off. Ian is delighted about his move to Tannadice. He says "I was in a rut in Glasgow, now I have everything to play for again."

One of the attractions for Ian deciding on United was the chance of playing in European football - he beat the signing deadline for the first-round U.E.F.A. tie against Bohemians next month. Ian will be in the United line-up for Saturday's home match against Aberdeen.

Nothing to Fear from Broughty Ferry Froth

For a time Mrs Brenda Chree thought she was alone in her concern over an odd-looking phenomenon at Broughty's seafront. But conversation with neighbours revealed this was not the case.

Point at issue was a frothy, yellow-tingled substance, which ringed the shoreline around the pebble beach towards Douglas Terrace.

"It wasn't evident all the time," said Mrs Chree, "but it wasn't something any of us felt we'd seen before".

Concerned
Naturally enough, the neighbour was concerned -  we hear so much about pollution these days, after all. Through Councillor Jenny Allen, the Environmental Health Department was contacted and a sample taken for examination by the Public Analyst. The good news - and this is being communicated both to Mrs Allen and Mrs Chree - is that there appears to be no harm in the foamy "suds" at the pebble beach.

Vegetation
The analyst can find nothing dangerous in the sample. The likeliest suggestion is that the foam or froth consists of vegetation matter washed into the Tay from feeder steams elsewhere on the estuary.

Frequently called to sample potentially dangerous materials, the Environmental Health Department will be happy to give an "all clear" on the pebble beach. It's their view that it's better safe than sorry.

Bright Tips

Comfy Pad - Fill a thick polythene bag with old nylons, seal the end with tape and you have a waterproof kneeling pad. Mrs M. MacPherson, Keith, Banffshire.

Try Chalk - Rub greasy lines on shirt necks or cuffs with chalk. Leave overnight, then launder. Chalk absorbs the oil and allows dirt to come out. Mrs A. Paterson, Aberdeen.
