Warm Welcome Awaits Discovery

MurraygateA rousing reception is expected today for the R.R.S. Discovery when she returns to the waters of the Tay, 85 years after departing for Captain Scott's 1901 expedition to the Antarctic. Three escort ships - The Coral Star, the lifeboat Spirit of Tayside and the Tay pilot cutter - were due to meet Discovery and the ship carrying her home, the semi-submerged Happy Mariner, at the Fairway Bouy at the mouth of the Tay at 2.30 p.m.

An R.A.F. Sea King helicopter will monitor her progress and as the flotilla moves up the estuary, three jets from R.A.F. Leuchars will stage a fly past and salute as Discovery nears the end of her homecoming journey.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out along the banks of the Tay and at Broughty Castle a special welcome will be given by the band of the sea cadets.

Happy Mariner won't dock at King George V Dock until tonight and the two ships will remain there until high tide at 10 tomorrow morning, when Discovery will be floated off and brought by tug into Victoria Dock.

Speaking from Discovery today, head of the Dundee Project, Mr Jeff Lonsdale, said - "This is a great day for Dundee, for all those who have been involved in bringing Discovery home and for the many people who rightly take a great pride in this city's unique heritage".

They'll Be Cheering for Lorna at Chambers

Dundee singer Lorna Bannon's band, Future, is carrying Scotland's hopes in the Song for Europe contest tomorrow night.

"Things are just brilliant. Everyone is so happy and excited" said Lorna today at the Maida Vale house where the group is staying.

The band, based in Edinburgh, travelled to London at the end of February to prepare for the U.K. qualifying heats. Lorna was the centre of attraction when Future were at the B.B.C. Studios to appear on the "Wogan" show.

"We did a photo session with Terry before going into the studios", explained Lorna "I'd worn a jacket outside, but once I took it off the B.B.C. were quite taken aback and told me my dress was just a wee bit low cut!"

Lorna agreed to do a quick change before going on the stage to sing "War of the Roses", which she hopes will finish ahead of the other eight entries tomorrow.

The regulars at the Chambers Lounge, Castle Street, will be paying particular attention and cheering on the girl who has often sung there in the past.

The single will be released by Virgin Records on Friday.

Bus Plan to Avoid Cup Fans Clash
Police in Dundee took steps today to head-off any possible trouble before and after the Scottish cup semi final between Aberdeen and Hibs at Dens Park.

Football specials from Aberdeen and Edinburgh were due at Tay Bridge Station about the same time this afternoon. Police were worried about possible clashes between the fans making their way to the match. To avoid this, the Aberdeen trains were stopped at Broughty Ferry and the fans were bussed directed to Dens Park. The Edinburgh contingent were met by a strong police presence at Tay Bridge Station. They were then escorted to Dens Park.

The usual segregation was enforced during the match. After the game it was arranged for the Dons fans to be bussed back to Broughty Ferry Station. The Hibs supporters were provided with a police escort through the city to the railway station.

Drybrough Cup Final Tomorrow
Lochee United and North End meet in the final of the Drybrough Cup at Downfield Park tomorrow (3 p.m.). Both sides have won the trophy once before, Lochee United in season 1979/80 when they beat Brechin Vics and North End two years ago when they beat Balbeggie.
In addition to the local trophy, the winners are rewarded with a place in the national finals.
In their previous efforts Lochee lost to Arniston Rangers in the semi-final, while North End went one better, only to lose to Ormiston Primrose in the final.
North End followers will no doubt consider they have edge following a 2-0 league win a few weeks ago, but finals are one off affairs, and anything can happen.
Lochee are injury free, but will be without Bertie Traynor who is cup-tied.
North End have on injury doubt. They aren't prepared to say who, but hope to have him fit after extensive treatment.

Timex: Talks on Monday
Management and Union representatives of Timex in Dundee will meet on Monday to discuss the implications for the company's 600-plus employees of the sale of Sinclair U.K. to Amstrad.
Many of the workers are involved in the manufacture of the Spectrum computer in the city. Mr John Kydd, district secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers, said he had sought a meeting this week, but was told it would have to wait until the end of the firm's holiday.
"I want to be able to give the workers some explanation or information about the deal when they return to work on Monday" he said. "We will also be seeking with Amstrad to see what plans they have for the production of the computers".
