Second High School for the City

KirktonA second high school for the city is in the planning stage. Kirkton High School will serve the big new housing schemes on the northern perimeter. It will house at least 1,200 pupils at all grades of secondary education - senior, junior and modified course.

And it has to be ready by August 1957 when the effect of the big birth boom late in the post-war years will hit the higher classes in our schools.

A new speedy method of constructed maybe adopted. The Education Committee are sending a deputation to Bolton and Coventry schools where schools of this type have been built or are in course of erection to see if it will be suitable.

A gas oven exploded and a three-inch main serving it ignited and sprayed a 30-foot jet of flame along the roof. A supply of paper nearby was also set alight. The fire was quickly brought under control by Dundee Fire Brigade.

Spirits Give Warnings

Some years back I was visiting a friend when a photo fell off her wall. My friend was upset about this, but we laughed it off saying it was just superstition.

The photo was the famous Barney Battles, the football player, a cousin of my friend. There was a telegram next day telling of his sudden death!
