Dundee Spring Holiday

Seldom have the streets of Dundee been so busy on Good Friday as they were yesterday. Not only were the Banks, Government and other offices and schools closed but in consequence of the lockout thousands of workers were in enforced idleness, and the number of people moving about was abnormally large. The weather was good in spite of a brisk westerly breeze.Children crowded the various parks of the city, engaged in rolling eggs and otherwise enjoying themselves. Special services were held in the Episcopal Churches, as well as in St Mary’s, St Mark’s and St Andrew’s Parish Churches.

For the Spring holiday the railway companies, while insisting on travellers paying full rates – all excursions and week-end tickets have been withdrawn - have announce an increased service of trains for both today and Monday.

The river steamers – the Marchioness of Bute and the Carlyle - are to make their initial runs for the season today, and will then, tomorrow and Monday provide facilities for getting to and from Newburgh and Perth.

Miners’ Startling Vote

Leaders Advise Restart
The result of the miners ballot on the question of resuming work pending the fixing of the minimum rates of wages by the District Boards was officially declared at a meeting of the Executive of the Miners’ Federation held in London.

The vote showed a majority against resumption of 42, 988. The Executive passed the following resolution:-

Seeing that there in no provision in the rules or regulations of the Federation to guide this committee as to the majority required to continue the strike, except the resolution passed at the Conference held on December 21, 1911, that a two-thirds majority was required to declare a national strike, we agree that the same majority be required to continue the strike.

Seeing that a two-third majority vote is not in favour or the continuance of the strike, and acting upon that vote, we advise the resumption of work.

Destitution in Lochee

Owing to the prolongation of the strike, a large amount of privation exists in the city, to the relief of which certain sums of money have been apportioned. At Lochee, where the strike is at its keenest, the police office has been besieged by destitute people, who clamour for assistance. The officials however, are powerless to render aid, as they have now funds wherewithal to disburse. As it was through the agency Inspector Fraser and the officers in that district that relief was afforded on the occasion of the strike a year ago, the people naturally expect to receive similar succour from that source, which in the mean time is inadmissible.

Well-Wisher of the City

Dundee can claim Mr Andrew Carnegie as on of “the most earnest of its well-wishers”.

Lord Provost Urquhart recently wrote to Mr Carnegie, in name of the Town Council, thanking him for his beneficence in connection with the establishment of Branch Libraries and a Central Reading-Room in the city, and his Lordship has received and acknowledgement, in which it may be noted Mr Carnegie gives effect to his views on the question of phonetic spelling. His letter which is dated from New York on April 1st is in the following terms:-

“My dear Lord Provost,
“Pray convey to the Town Council of Dundee my grateful acknowledgements for the cordial letter of thanks you have been kind enuf to address to me.”

“Our visits to Dundee have deeply impressed Mrs Carnegie and myself; the money given has been so widely used, the public appreciation so widespread, that we have our reward in fullest measure.”

“As a freeman of Dundee, I venture to enrol myself among the most earnest of its well-wishers” – Very Truly Yours,
“Andrew Carnegie”.
