Curtailing Production - Short Time in the Mills

Dundee staple trade has for some time been, and at present is, in anything but a prosperous state and it was learned in the just market on Thursday that steps are to be taken immediately to reduce production in the hope that good may result. In several mills and factories, notably in the west end, short time is to be resorted to. The usual course of extending the week-end by closing down on Friday or Saturday at noon and reopening on Tuesday morning will in most cases be adopted. The proprietors of a large establishment, however, are credited with the intention of cutting off the morning three hours and not beginning operations until 10 a.m., thus reducing the working week by 15 hours. It is also stated that in many establishments the spring holidays will be extended, and that the workers will be free from Thursday evening, 8th April until the morning of Tuesday, 13th.

Whaler Sold to Norway

The Dundee whaler Eclipse has been sold to foreign owners. The purchasers are a firm of Norwegian shipbrokers, and the transaction has been carried through by Mr Robert Ritchie, Dundee. It is understood that the ship will be employed by the Norwegian Expedition under the command of Captain Raoul Amunsen, who made the North-West passage in the little Gjoa, and who now seeks to add to his laurels by locating the North Pole. It is learned that the price is £6000.
