Although my father had a car my parents often took me on public transport. It was 1956 and I was 6 years of age when my father took me for a ride in a tramcar before the Dundee trams were withdrawn from service.
As things turned out my father got into conversation with the tram driver and we ended up on the driver's platform. The driver allowed me to work the handle which started the tramcar and at the next stop the other handle which stopped it. My mother always insisted that it was near where Ninewells Hospital is now that my tramcar driving experience took place.
Getting to drive a tramcar at the age of 6 is something I have remembered ever since.
