Dundee Labour Exchange – Windows Smashed

Overgate was on Thursday the scene of a startling incident which created some excitement. About nine o’clock those in the lower part on the thoroughfare had their attention arrested by the crash of breaking glass, followed almost immediately afterwards by another noise of the same character. Investigations showed that two plate glass windows in the Labour Exchange had been smashed, the damage, it is stated, having being caused by a man, who is alleged to have deliberately put his foot first through one pane and then the other. A considerable crowd gathered, amongst whom it was rumoured that it was the work of the suffragettes, but this was apparently unfounded. A man was arrested in connection with the affair.

City Calendar Ablaze

The works of the Meadowside Calendaring Company, Limited were on Monday night the scene of an outbreak of fire, which, fortunately, was early observed and extinguished without much difficulty. A section of the staff was working overtime, and just as the men were ceasing operations about ten o’clock they were startled to observe that a quantity of cloth lying beside the machinery on the top flat had become ignited. They brought chemical extinctors, with which the premises were equipped and pending the arrival of the fire brigade under Captain Weir, who ordered out the two motor vehicles, they succeeded in keeping the fire well in hand. The result was that the Fire Brigade were soon able to complete the work of the extinction. The cause of the fire is believed to have been friction in the machinery.

“A Coal Tip”

The increased price of coal must be looked at with some alarm to the working man’s honest wife. But necessity always proves to be the mother of invention. This is a tip that will make a hundredweight of coal last much longer than the ordinary way. Waste paper, old newspapers and brown paper should be collected and moderately steeped in water, wrung out and make into balls of suitable size, and put on the back of the fire. This will be found to spell economy to the hard-pressed housewife.

Another Station in Dock Street

To meet the increasing demands on Dundee’s Electricity Department the Engineer considers that a new sub-station is necessary in the Dock Street area, and the Electricity Committee of the Town Council on Monday agreed to recommend to the Town Council to adopt his suggestion and secure a site for the new building a piece of ground at the rear of the Custom House offered by the Harbour Trust.
The Committee approved.

Dundee Joiners’ Wages

Dundee joiners have modified their demands, but the employers have held to their position not to alter the work conditions or the wages. The original request was for an eight hour bonus all the year around, with an advance of wages from 9d to 10d per hour. This was refused by the employers, and thereafter the men, while still asking for the eight hours day, reduced their request in the matter of wages to 9½d per hour. The employers have considered this application, and have intimated that they cannot see their way to grant it.
