Considerable interest was created in Victoria Road, Dundee, the other evening by the sudden appearance of a starling in the window of a licensed grocer's shop. The bird had found its way into the premises by a back window, and with the object of escape flew to the front, and quickly caused some excitement by its fluttering among the bottles of liquor laid out in the window. Naturally it attracted the attention of passers-by, and a crowd of considerable dimensions soon assembled and watched developments.Attempts were made by the shop-men to capture the bird, but this proved no easy matter, and a dramatic point was reached when the cat appeared on the top shelf and prepared to spring down upon the excited starling. Pussy's object, however, was frustrated by a tender-hearted assistant, who promptly seized it by the tail, and effectually restrained its natural inclination to pounce upon its prey. By this time the bird had got into position where it was a matter of no small difficulty to reach it. Ultimately, however, the starling was caught, and handed to a lad who promised to care for it, while the cat looked on dejectedly, and the interested crowd dissolved, after 15 minutes' excitement of a mild and thoroughly economical description.

At a meeting of the Sanitary Company on Tuesday the recently appointed lady health visitors submitted a report on their work for February. They state that they visited 1,245 dwellings, chiefly of the one and two roomed type, situated in the districts around Blackness Road, Hawkhill and Perth Road. They found that 1,019 of the houses were clean, and 226 were in a dirty condition. In 22 of the houses there were children of 9 years of age in charge of the house and younger members of the family. They revisited these houses in the evening between 6 and 9 o'clock, and advised the parents to send the older children to school, and to get a capable person to look after the younger ones or to send them to the day nurseries. In all they revisited 164 houses, in which they found a vast improvement in cleanliness, and in many cases the walls and ceilings of the dirty houses had been thoroughly cleaned. They were struck with the lack of knowledge on the part of the women regarding the cooking of a wholesome diet and the way to feed their infants. In many cases the infants food was prepared at 9 in the morning to serve till 6 at night. The visitors remarked that they were well received, and the people seemed thankful for the advice given them.
To make a fire-screen with Christmas cards the easiest plan is to buy a cheap but strong folding fire-screen in a bamboo or enamelled frame. Soak all the stiff cards in cold water for a time, drain off the water, and when quite dry place artistically in position by means of paste. A pretty effect is obtained by classifying the cards - that is, arranging all the figures on one screen and all the scenes on another, but great care must be exercised in putting them together.
At Dundee Police Court on Thursday a woman was charged with laying down ashes in a court at the rear of a property in Whorterbank, Lochee. Two plain-clothes constables were in hiding for the purpose of detecting such offenders, and on discovering the woman charged her with the offence. She thereupon informed her neighbours, and the constables were stoned. They had beat a retreat, but returning later succeeded in effecting a second capture. A fine of 5s with the alternative of 24 hours was imposed. A girl aged 16 was admonished for a similar offence.
An east end policeman, of by no means small proportions, both lengthwise and broadwise, has of recent weeks been boasting of his sprinting abilities, and having offered a challenge to engage in a 100 yards race with a residentor in the locality, the event promises to be of an interesting nature. Seventeen stones in weight, Robert, nevertheless, is confident of winning.
I think otherwise, but time alone will tell, and I may be able to announce the result next week.
