Tributes were paid by district councillors and officials on Wednesday night to Dundee's Chief Librarian, Mr Duncan Torbet, who was attending his last meeting of the Cultural Services Committee prior to his retiral on July 24th. Mr Bill Roberts said Mr Torbet had been with the local authority in Dundee for nearly 50 years and during that time had given "wonderful service" and was a "credit to the city". Lord Provost James Gowans suggested it would be appropriate to arrange some sort of civic reception for both Mr Torbet and Museum Curator Mr James Boyd who has also announced his retiral. The committee agreed that this should be arranged.

Two groups have this week announced concert dates in Dundee. The first to look forward to is in the Marryat Hall on Tuesday 22nd June when Theatre of Hate will be playing. They are associated with the Still Record Label and have released four singles in the past couple of years. It was their last release "Do you believe in the west world" that brought them to the fore of the national music scene, although their previous releases have all topped the independent charts. Tickets are £3 and the action starts at 8pm.
Bucks Fizz are the other group to include Dundee in their touring schedule and they'll no doubt appeal to an entirely different set of fans. They are of course the British quartette formed to represent the country in the last Eurovision Song Contest and have successfully managed to follow in the footsteps of other Eurovision groups like Abba. They've had numerous hit records and should draw a large crowd to the Caird Hall when they play there on Monday 16th August. Tickets are on sale now at £4 & £4.50 at the City Square Booking Office.

There are 800 University Graduates this year and Her Majesty will be amongst them in the afternoon's graduation party at Belmont Hall. The visit is particularly welcomed in the University's centenary year.
Rail travellers in the East of Scotland are no longer to be greeted by a ticket collector at the entrance to station platforms. From last Monday as part of the new "open station" concept, all tickets are checked on the train instead of before boarding or at the journey's end. Dundee station is one of those "open". The scheme is experimental.
