Dundee Bank to Close

OvergateThe Murraygate, Dundee, branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, is to merge with the High Street branch. Trading at 53, Murraygate will cease on February 24, with all businesses previously handled there being transferred to High Street.Preparations for the merger began last year when a considerable sum was spent improving the facilities in the High Street. The two branches already share the same manager, deputy manager, and assistant manager, and a spokesman for the bank said there would be no redundancies.

Future staffing levels at the bank will depend on the volume of business.

"No" to Late Licence

The Windmill Bar in Dundee's Hilltown, had an application for a late licence refused yesterday after the Licensing Board heard a police spokesman say there had been 34 reports of disturbances in the past year. On one occasion a policeman was knocked unconscious.

R.C.J. Properties and Mrs Helen Thomson had applied to Dundee District Licensing Board for two extensions to permitted hours. The board agreed to an afternoon extension between 2.30pm and 5pm but refused an extension from 11pm to midnight.

Councillor Fred Welsh said, "I can't see how you want this extra hour when you have all this trouble. You would be better to forget about twelve o'clock opening and let some other mug take the troublemakers."
After the meeting Mr Bob Costello of R.C.J. Properties, said 2I am making a complaint to the Chief Constable, through Mr Gordon Wilson M.P., about continuing police harassment.
Once it is shown I an right, I will be taking a  private action against the police, as I have done already over the return of some property."

The Bellman

I see that the ½p is to bit the dust - surely one of the shortest lived coins in history. It now costs more to produce than its actual value. I can't say I'll be sorry to see it go. It was hardly one of the best liked coins of the realm. I don't know how many I've seen lying in the street or on shop floors - with no one considering it worth the effort to pick it up!

Lemon Cream Pie

Delicious served with fresh cream - Miss Susan Craik, Inverurie.
Take ½  lemon jelly, a small can of evaporated milk, grated rind and juice of ½ lemon, chocolate vermicelli, angelica, cherries.

Biscuit crumb pastry - 6oz sweet wholemeal biscuits and 3oz melted butter. Crush the biscuits into crumbs, add melted butter and mix together. Line bottom and sides of a pie dish or a sandwich tin with the mixture and leave to cool.

Dissolve the jelly in ¼ pint of hot water and leave in a cool place. When cold whisk in the evaporated milk, lemon juice and rind. Pour into the pie case. When set sprinkle with the vermicelli, and decorate with angelica and cherries.
