That Was the Thaw That Was!

“If this is the thaw, bring back the freeze-up”.

That was the attitude of suburban Dundonians yesterday as they woke to find one of the heaviest snowfalls of the winter.

True, the thaw was here in the form of wet snow, churned into ankle deep slush by early morning traffic ready for the poor pedestrians. And for the fitba’-starved fans, whose hopes of the Dundee-Hibs ties had been pent up by the slow thaw of Thursday, the fresh fall means another Saturday afternoon’s prospect of watching a possible tiddlywinks contest on the “telly”.

And there was fun and games for the Corporation Transport Department in a more serious vein trying to keep the city’s bus going in the worst conditions so far. Early-morning buses were delayed until snowploughs cleared the most difficult routes on the northern perimeter of the city.

For Alexander’s it was even worse. All roads inland from Dundee were blocked and services suspended to give the snowploughs a chance to break through.

One Kirriemuir man takes the medal for perseverance. He left the county town at 7.30 a.m. for Dundee and got as far as Lumley Den before he had to run back.

He next tried the Forfar-Perth road, hoping to cut off at Newtyle and thence to Dundee. His car became stuck in a drift at Eassie and when he freed it he headed to Perth.

He got as far as Balbeggie, reversed and motored back to Forfar. He finally got to Dundee just after 11 a.m., having come via Arbroath!

In the city the worst-hit area was St. Mary’s where, coupled with last week-end’s fall, snow lay about a foot deep.

On Thursday and Friday of last week, while rain cleared the central areas, a blizzard blew north of the Kingsway. The same conditions prevailed on Thursday night-Friday morning with the “Holy City” bearing the brunt of the so called “thaw”.

Kirkton was also badly hit, but farther east there was only a slight covering.

The Law once again took on its icing-cake mantle, with the memorial acting as the weather vane for the south-easterly thaw-borne blizzard.

Panto Special

Dundee really went to town on Saturday. Six hundred and thirty folk boarded the 10.10 a.m. special for Glasgow, in a trip organised by the Dundee Ratepayers’ Association.

The whole affair, arranged with almost military precision by Bailie Leonard D. Johnstone, went off without a single hitch.

Highlight of the day was the visit to the pantomime, “A Love for Jamie” starring Kenneth McKellar. After the show the party had high tea in two big Sauchiehall Street restaurants.

Just Think – Only 21 Weeks to the Holidays!

Just what the doctor ordered – a cure to beat these winter blues!

It’s been a long, dreary stuggle, but all the weather experts are predicting a wonderful summer. All we can say is – roll on a sun-drenched Broughty beach.

It’s not so far away as you might think – 21 weeks, as we were delighted to discover the other day.

The very thought suddenly made us forget the misery of the snow, ice and burst pipes.

And have you noticed the signs of spring ahead? Shops are full of new fashion, gardeners are preparing for the thaw that MUST come soon and the days are stretching out.

So forget the weather this morning and think of what lies ahead. And with no football today, at least mum is at last getting dad to do all those wee jobs he has put off for so long!!

Aye, its an ill wind…

Macaroni and Sausage Casserole

A delicious dish – Miss E. Shepherd, Aberdeen.
Take 1lb pork or steak sausages, 2 oz macaroni, 2 tablespoons grated cheese, 2 onions, salt and pepper and 1 small tin tomato puree.

After browning them in frying pan, place sausages in bottom of casserole. Place a layer of onion, thinly sliced, on top. Add the macaroni, boiled in salted water till tender.

Pour tomato puree over and sprinkle with pepper and salt, then the grated cheese. Bake in moderate oven for an hour.

Bright Tips 1963

Clean “Specs” – Use eau de cologne to clean spectacles. It quickly removes spots and grease from the lenses and keeps them from steaming up. Mrs Robertson, Lerwick.

Fresh Vegetables – To freshen stale or frost-bitten vegetables, soak for two or three hours in very cold water to which a teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda is added. Miss Jack, Banffshire.

Pudding Tip – When making a pudding with a sponge batter over fruit, place a thin slice of bread between fruit and sponge. The bread cannot be detected and the batter isn’t soggy. Mrs Hutchison, Glasgow.
