The Hilltown Area

I was born there, went to school there, delivered papers and milk there, started my first job as apprentice barber there, and finished the last 21 years of my working life, in my barber shop at the 'Tap O' the Hull'.

I can recall the time when Hilltown Terrace was being built, and have fond memories of the 'night watchie' sitting in his canvas hut on a winters night with the coal burning brazier, and we would sometimes spend a while with him to give him a little, much needed company. The men who did this work were most likely to be disabled war veterans, this one in particular had only one arm. I don't know if they spent the whole night on watch, but he was always there when us kids went off to bed.
