Fury Over Dens Park Lock Out

Irate fans who found gates at the Dundee v. Dundee United Skol Cup quarter final tie at Dens Park firmly closed in their faces 10 minutes before kick-off last night contacted the “Courier” to complain. The supporters were still queuing to get into the ground at the turnstiles at the corner of Dens Road and Provost Road about 7.20 p.m. when the doors were shut, leaving hundreds stranded, they claim.

One in particular, Mr John Uglow, said he was both annoyed and surprised, especially as managers of both clubs had asked for a large turnout for the occasion.

“Jocky Scott and Jim McLean have been going on about trying to get the supporters in and yet last night we couldn’t get in when we tried, I am not a regular supporter but because of what they said I thought I’d go along and see the game. But there were also many regular attenders left outside. Many of them said exactly what I am saying now – I’m not going back!”

“There was no reason given for the gate being shut before the game started and the ground certainly wasn’t full”

A spokesman for Tayside Police later said the decision to close the gates had not been made by them but by Dundee F.C.

“The South facing terrace became very full, very quickly, very early” he explained.

“When the doors to the south terracing were shut the majority of those outside moved along to Sandeman Street to get in. There were quite a number of supporters still outside the ground, but many turned up late.”

• Police said there had been five arrests related to the game.

Jubilation for Jocky

Jubilant Jocky Scott emerged from the home dressing room to declare with a broad grin, “It would be reasonable to suggest I am quite pleased” (reports Steve Bruce).

The delighted Dundee boss continued “After tonight, supporters and players must believe this club can now compete with the big guns. We were completely outplayed in the first half, when Bobby Geddes kept us in the game with two superb saves. We simply didn’t play allowing United to dominate, but the second half and extra time belonged to us. And I think our fitness was really good”.

Of goal heroes Tommy Coyne and Keith Wright, the manager said, Coyne and Wright perhaps didn’t have one of their better games, but both were there to take their goals, which is what matters. That could turn out to be our most important game of the season and the result certainly helps to make up for the disappointment of losing to United in the Scottish Cup semi-final last season”.

£6000 to “Sell” the Slides

Dundee District Council’s Leisure and Recreation committee last night set aside £6000 for marketing of the swimming and leisure centre’s recently completed £500,000 water slides.

The money will be used to promote the chutes and includes £1018 for ‘graphic imagery’ to the centre’s delivery van. The committee also agreed to spend almost £25,000 on a closed circuit television security system for the water flumes, due to be opened to the public soon.

Dog Show’s Success is Spot On

Mrs Jeanette Steen, of Birkdale, Strathmartine, by Dundee, had an outstanding success with her seven and a half year old Dalmatian bitch, Champion Dapple Dana of Sidlaw, in the Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show at Ingliston at the weekend. The bitch won her class in the champion stakes class, which is only open to champions, and then went on to beat the winner of the other champion stakes class to become the overall winner.

Mrs Steen and her prize-winning Dalmatian will now go on to the final in Birmingham at the start of next year.
