A cablegram from St. Johns, Newfoundland, states that the crew of the Dundee whaler Snowdrop, which was lost in the Arctic regions a year ago, are found to have spent the winter with the natives. They endured great hardships, but all are well except one, who is suffering from frozen feet.

The unemployed in Dundee are to run candidates to represent their interests at the forthcoming municipal election. A large meeting was held at Albert Square yesterday afternoon, when an invitation was extended to all unemployed men in the city to join the Committee, which would select and support suitable candidates. A Mr Williams who was present urged them to force the hands of the men who sat in their municipal gas chamber. Dundee Town Council, he said, had become the laughing-stock of Scotland and it would be impossible to find a worse set of Councillors. Most of the candidates at municipal elections declared that they had no axe to grind. They (the unemployed) wanted men who had an axe to grind - the axe of the working class.
It is understood the Messrs Charles Barrie and Son, Ship-owners, Dundee, have contacted with Messrs Napier and Miller, Glasgow, for the building of a new steamer with a carrying capacity of from 10,000 to 10,500 tons. The vessel will be 420 feet in length, and will be specially fitted up for cargo and passenger trade in the East, and also for the carriage of emigrants.
It is understood that the offers included tenders from local shipbuilders, and, in view of the present state of the shipbuilding industry in Dundee, the desire of the Messrs Barrie to keep the work of constructing the new vessel within the town, if that were possible. The difference between the quotations of the Dundee and Glasgow yards, however, was too great to be overlooked, and the order has accordingly gone to the Clyde in preference to the Tay.
