Magical Moment at the Square

MurraygateThe heart of Dundee will be the place to be next Thursday, December 4. That’s the big switch-on night for the town’s festive lights, with 6.25 p.m. as the magic moment at City Square.

This year too, you’ll be able to make that evening trip to town worthwhile, for the shops and stores are to remain open till 9 o’clock - as they’ll do on every Thursday right up to Christmas itself.

Next Thursday will see Santa’s horse drawn sleigh going through the town and the bairns will see the switch-on make by two life sized Snow Bears, costumed characters from Dundee Rep’s forthcoming production of “Snow Queen”, Hans Andersen’s wonderful children’s story.

Characters from other local pantos will be on hand, as will the City of Dundee Pipe Band and choirs of children to sing Christmas music across the Square.

A Nativity scene in another part of the Square that night will have added appeal with the introduction of some real animals from Camperdown Wildlife Centre.

The city stores will be handing out sweets to children who’ve come with their parents to see the grand start to the festive period. All in all, a very positive effort from the city this year.

Ladies’ Tourney

The cream of Scotland’s lady footballers will demonstrate their talents at Riverview Park, Monifieth, on Sunday.

Local club, Dundee Strikers, are the hosts, and 19 teams from all over Scotland will take part, the competition, run on a mini-league basis, gets underway at 9.45 a.m.

Expensive Officials

Dundee United are to make an official complaint to the S.F.A.  over crippling expense bills for referees and linesmen at European ties.

The Tannadice club reveal they made an overall loss of £9548 from the U.E.F.A. Cup second-round ties against University Craiova of Romania. A large slice of the deficit was due to the £3997 they had to fork out on travel, accommodation and incidentals for the three match officials from Czechoslovakia.

When United meet Hajduk Split in the third round a West German will be in charge at Tannadice, which will mean another hefty expenses bill.

New Jobs for City

Jobs for 119 people will be provided for a year due to four environmental and landscape improvement schemes approved by Dundee District Lord Provost’s committee. They will cost £712,000. Two are in housing estates and the other will be in Templeton Woods.

Call Up for Geddes

Den’s goalie Bobby Geddes was with the Scotland squad this week for specialist training under Englishman Alan Hodgkinson. Geddes got his chance because of an injury to Dundee United’s Billy Thomson. It is deserved recognition for the Dundee player, who is in superb form this season.

The Goalie’s

Football stars joined forces on Saturday night to help launch former Dundee United keeper Hamish McAlpine on a new career. The ex-Tannadice star is now mine host of the former Terra Nova bar in Dudhope Street, aptly re-named “The Goalie’s”.

Mountain Magic

The Dundee Mountaineering Film festival, at Dundee University on November 14 and 15, will give some fascinating viewing – as well as stimulating talk!

For this, the fourth festival, you can see films at separate performances on the Friday evening or Saturday afternoon. And ”The Climber” lecture, which takes place at the Bonar Hall on the Saturday evening, will be a presentation by Border Television on the making of their series “Lakeland Rock”.

The photographic competition, which has attracted more entries than every this year, has seven categories from colour slides of mountain landscapes within and outwith Scotland to a special section for the best photograph in Glencoe.

Over 6000 people attended last year’s festival and assured the event’s continuation into 1986. They’re looking forward to seeing many more of you this month – and thoughts of 1987 won’t be far away at the close.
