The Magic of Milne

Dundee MultisBrilliant Dundee United sailed into the last eight of Europe’s top football competition on Wednesday night – thanks to a wee bit of magic from a local hero.Ralph Milne was the pin-u[ of the chant-brigade on the Tannadice terracings as he hit a couple of beauties to put United on the victory trail against Belgium’s Standard Liege. Those two goals raised 22 year old Ralphie’s total in Europe to 11, making him the club’s most prolific scorer ever at this level of football.

For fans who like statistics, Ralph’s opener against Humrun Spartans in the last round was Scottish football clubs’ 250th in European competition.

Schools’ Closure Talks To Go Ahead

Because of falling rolls, four of every ten desks in Dundee Schools are unoccupied. This surprise fact was given to Tayside Regional Council yesterday (Thursday) by Mrs Barbara Vaughan, education convener, before the council decided – by 25 votes to 13 – to go ahead with consultations about possible closure of seven primary schools. Six of them in Dundee – Dryburgh, Blackshade, Invertay, Monifieth, St Margaret’s, Fowlis Easter and Strathmartine.

Night Life’s Looking Up In Dundee

The fact that two new night spots are to be opened within the next few weeks should come as welcome news to many people in Dundee. Although there are already a fair number of discos, additional attractions can only serve to offer a better selection and encourage the others to keep up their standards.

Dundee’s Brown Street is the venue for the Fountain Disco to be opened at the end of this month. Its attractions include smoke and bubble machines, special lighting effects and a hydraulic roof. Main disc jockey will be Quincey McAdam, a former DJ at the Camden Palace in London. With two lounges and three bars, the disco will hold 800 people.

Fat Sam’s is the second new disco and it’s planned to have it opening night on 7th December. Situated in a former warehouse in South Ward Road, the disco is the brainchild of two business men, Andy Prior and Ben Reilly. With three bars, a stage and a large dance floor, the disco will hold 700 and will feature an Italian lighting system. An added attraction at Fat Sam’s is a plan to have live music twice a week.

With Mecca also planning to carry out improvement and alteration work to the Barracuda, things are looking up for Dundee’s night life!

The Bellman – Make A Note

Clashing Dates – that factor has so often been the bugbear of Dundonians when it comes to organising fund-raising events. You know the situation – the church, for instance, has arranged a coffee morning, only to discover another similar event at a Kirk less than a mile away. Often too, events in the suburbs suffer because something similar is going on down the town. Result is that much needed funds are diverted from deserving causes because of this unforeseen and unwanted rivalry.

Dundee’s museum’s are now to offer a service which could combat the clashes, a diary of events. It will be available at the desk within the main library at the Wellgate. It isn’t the obligation of staff to look for events, though – organisers must make their own entries. Obviously the idea will depend on people making it work. The jumble sale organiser, for instance, can check up on the chosen date for his event.

Provided it is clear of “opposition” in his neighbourhood, the sale can be planned with confidence. If the date is already taken by somebody else, them there should be time to reconsider.

The diary isn’t designed for logging major events in the city, most of which are usually well publicised in advance. It’s mainly for the minor gatherings and functions.

And its emphasised that the system will only work if organisers are prepared to use the service. Should it be a success, however, it might be extended to branches of the library.
