Another Dens Newcomer

HilltownArchie Knox made it a hat-trick of signings in the space of eight days when he paid out between £40,000 and £50,000 yesterday to bring Ayr United midfielder Robert Connor to Dens Park. Dundee's latest signing has been seven years with the Somerser Park Club, joining them from Ayr United Boys' Club when he was only 16.After the signing of three new players for the club in such a short time, some might think that Dundee would now sit back, for a while at least. But that is not on as far as Archie Knox is concerned. "Even after signing these three players we are no further forward than we were. We have already lost Iain Ferguson and Jim McInally, and it looks as thought we will lose Cammy Fraser as well. So we are really back at the start as far as numbers are concerned and are still on the lookout for other players coming to the club"

At the end of the season Archie Knox estimated he needed at least six newcomers. With Bobby Geddes now the only experienced goal-keeper on the staff this could be the next department to be straightened.

'Village' Plan for Lochee Shoppers

If all goes to plan, Lochee folk will be shopping in the all-covered High Gate Centre before Christmas. The following spring the same shoppers will be able to make all their purchases in the also fully-covered Weaver Village.

These new names will be attached not to any fresh development in Lochee, but to the already well-known and liked High Street shopping Centre. The developers working closely with the city council aim to provide cover overhead, form proper entrance doors and turn the existing precinct into two shopping malls.

The High Gate Centre will be formed at what Lochee people would regard as the present main entrance to the precinct - the one which takes you past Boots and in towards Fine Fare. Until now, this approach has been pleasant enough with its flower beds, but open-topped and vulnerable to the elements. Now there's to be a dome-type roof of transparent material and you'll gain access through glass doors, just as you do entering the Wellgate for instance.

Farther down the High Street alongside Vision Hire Shop, will be formed the front entrance to Weaver Village, again the between roof space will be completely covered to provide a sheltered mall. Significant changes will take place at the rear of this proposed new mall. Construction work will provide a meeting type enclosed area with access again through glass doors, alongside the present local office of the housing division.

Lochee's Councillors, Charles Farquhar and Tom McDonald are pleased with the proposals for such major improvement at the shopping centre.

Harp are Champs!

Harp are Tayside Region first division champions for the first time in their history. Their 5-1 win at Arbroath S.C. on Saturday took them to the 36-point mark, and following Arbroath Vic's mid-week win over Forfar West End, the other challengers cannot match Harp's total.
So with one game still to play they are the champions and deservedly so, showing great skill and determination in their play through a long campaign. Everyone at the Beechwood Park must be congratulated for the hard work they put into their game and the dedication they showed both on and off the park.

Arbroath Vics finished as runners-up and this duo go into the Albert Herschell Trophy with second division pair Bankfoot and Balbeggie.

Harp meet Balbeggie, while Bankfoot are drawn against Arbroath Vics.

Pedestrian Ban

Because of the likelihood of danger to the public, Tayside Regional Council has closed a 30-metre length OF Cameron's Close, a Dundee City Centre pedestrian shortcut. The close runs from Murraygate to Albert Square adjacent to the cleared La Scala cinema site. The closed section is at the Murraygate end, and the temporary traffic order banning pedestrians will continue for six months whistle the demolition and redevelopment work is carried out.

An alternative route for pedestrians is available via Commercial Street and Meadow Entry.

Kestrel Seek Redundancies

Following completion of the 1000-tonne sea-bed template for the North Sea Sun Oil's Balmoral Field development in the North Sea, Dundee based fabrication company Kestrel Marine are circulating employees seeking volunteers for redundancy. Closing date for applications is next month.

A Walk to Watch Out For

Shop floor staff at Timex, Camperdown, are taking the Tayside scanner appeal cause to their hearts. Having already held collections around the Dundee factory, Eleanor McLaughlin and Margaret Gorrie have now organised a sponsored walk for this Sunday. They'll be leaving from Camperdown at 9am and walking all the way to Meigle, where they'll halt at the Belmont Arms.

"We'd hope to raise around £300 by this effort," said Eleanor this week "We've already collected for other things, but felt it was better to do something for our own town". The staff have already handed in money to the scanner appeal.

Museum Renamed

Dundee's Museum and Art Gallery Complex in Albert Square is to be known as the McManus Gallery, after the late Maurice McManus, Lord Provost of Dundee from 1960 to 1967. The district council voted 25-16 in favour of the new name last night.
