Reduced Demand at Dundee Factory

City ChurchesDundee Fabrics, who manufacture fashion and leisure garments at their Kilspindie Road factory, have reduced operations to one week in two because of reduced demand. They employ over 200 workers.

£500 Damage at a Disco

The future of under-18 dances at Broughty Ferry's Castle Green Leisure Centre is doubtful following extensive damage caused by vandals at a recent disco.

As well as the usual mess to clear up, staff were faced at the end of the night with a gent's toilet that had been virtually demolished.

The damage was so great that the fitments will have to be entirely replaced. The cost, in financial terms, of this senseless vandalism is about £500.

But there's another price to be paid here by the hundreds of young people who attend these discos. Because of the stupid actions of an irresponsible minority, the bulk of these youngsters will have to be deprived of these discos in the future.

Play Festival

Six clubs and eight plays are entered for the Dundee and South Angus District one-act play festival.

Venue is the College of Education Theatre on February 21st and 23rd when Phase One Theatre, Ryte Players, Arena, Monifieth Dramatic Club, Phoenix and Monifieth Dramatic Society will contest the honours.

Community drama in the area is presently strong and the revival, which seemed to occur last season, will have been strengthened by area success in the national finals at Greenock last Spring.

Ye Amphibious Ancients' Bathing Association

Twelve men and four women took the plunge at Broughty Ferry pier in the traditional New Year's Day dip organised by Ye Amphibious Ancients' Bathing Association.

Odd Tastes: Your Views

    * I have a friend who always takes marmalade with her bacon and eggs.
    * I knew an old man who liked nothing better than strawberries with kippered herring.
    * Syrup spread on his bridie - that was my friend's idea of a delicacy.
    * My gran took porridge and stout - yeuch!

No Waste

To use the last scrap from a soft margarine tub, turn upside down over hot, cooked vegetables in a serving dish. Rising steam will clean the container and the greens will get the residue.

Handy Advice

From the beginning of this year, large families are entitled only to free milk and vitamins on the grounds of hardship.

This means that those who are not receiving supplementary benefit, family income support or claiming on grounds of low income are no longer eligible.

Your Citizens' Advive Bureau will be able to help you find out your entitlements and discuss other means of assistance.

Change of Venue

The mod discos that I reported last week were to be held every Saturday in the Marryat Hall have had to undergo a change of venue due to difficulties with the hall.

DJ Tony Cochrane has had to look for other premises and this Saturday the disco will take place in the Grey Lodge premises in Wellington Street.

Admission to the disco, which runs from 9 pm until 1 am, £1.
