Monday first could mark a significant step forward in the move to give Dundee a whole-body scanner. In City Chambers, at 7.30 p.m., District Councillor William P. Roberts is calling together all those interested in the setting up of a scanner public appeal fund.Much, of course, will depend upon the support from the public for the idea. At best, Bill Roberts, would see the public meeting move toward the establishment of a steering group. This far, he has been more than impressed with messages of support which have reached him almost daily.
He feels Taysiders generally and Dundonians in particular, will want to see the area move with the technological times and obtain the scanner, a diagnostic tool which can speed the detection of disease, the treatment of, and even save human life.
One thought which has occupied the mind of Bill Roberts is this "Gathering the money would be one thing. But we'd need competent people to look after it"
In this aspect has arrived the news. Members of the city council's finance staff - Mr Roberts is an elected member of the council - have volunteered to look after the fund in their own time and without payment. "I am very appreciative of this offer," said Mr Roberts "This is certainly something that could be followed through".
Any fund-raising project will probably be long-term and depend utterly on the goodwill of the citizens, plus their energy in following through on money-raising projects.
Bill Roberts has little doubt that Dundee's clubs, pubs, offices and factories will respond. The cause he feels, is just too great to fail.
Out With A Bang
The twin chimneys of the former Carolina Port Power station, Dundee will go out with a bang this month. Controlled explosions will topple both of the huge structures and a film unit from Strathclyde University will record the final moments of the chimneys, which are over 250 feet and 360 feet respectively. The smaller chimney will be demolished on Sunday and the larger one on April 15th, both at 3.15 p.m.
90 Minutes Away From "Absolute Glory" - says Jim McLean
Dundee United supporters celebrated long into the night following the team's marvellous 2-0 win at Tannadice against the lire millionaires of Roma in the semi-final of the European Cup.
Although Jim McLean's heroes are still 90 minutes away from a place in the final fans are convinced the Italians are already out. The final is played in the Italian capital next month and it could now be the Tannadice shock troops who will grace the Olympic Stadium, denying A.S. Roma an appearance on their own ground. But United must first visit the stadium on April 25 for the second leg and it could be a mistake to rule out the Italians. Roma coach Nils Liedholm certainly doesn't think the tie is over. He commented: "We created a lot of chances but we failed to convert them. It will be different in Rome and we will have Paulo Falcao available then. Dundee United are a well-organised team but they will have problems in the second leg"
Jim McLean was apprehensive before the start, particularly with the first leg at Tannadice. He was afraid the reputation of Roma's stars might get to his players. "We did begin slowly but I was really proud of how my players went about their business after the interval" he said. "My players now know that they can match Roma in every department of the game. We scored two goals but it could have been more and we are just 90 minutes away from absolute glory."
Jim Mclean must now get his men down to earth and to the next job in hand.
Bucks Fizz's Dundee Date
With a whole string of pop hits to their credit, it doesn't seem like just three years since Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest.
Indeed, they are one of the few new groups who have won themselves a place near the top of the highly-competitive pop world as a result of the competition. Along with Abba, they have managed to shake off the "fairground" music image of the contest and have established themselves among Britain's leading attractions both at home and abroad.
They are appearing at the Caird Hall on Tuesday May 8. Tickets are available from Caird Hall booking office priced £5 and £6.
Two Vital Weeks For Dundee - Gordon Gray Talking
The likelihood of the Dundee-St Johnstone game at Dens Park on May 12 being a relegation decider is becoming more and more probable. Both clubs have only four games remaining, although the Dens Parkers have a three-point advantage. But looking at their programme, additional points are going to be difficult to gather.
Tomorrow (Saturday) the Dark Blues are at home to Aberdeen. To take points from the Dons is always difficult, but Alec Ferguson and his men will not be in a charitable mood following their disappointing Cup Winners Cup defeat by Porto on Wednesday. Dundee may be the side to feel the back lash of that game.
Then the Dens men have to play Rangers - and at Ibrox, too.
With the Light Blues determined to get revenge for their revenge for the cup defeat, this will also be a tough one to win. Two points from the game against Hearts on Wednesday May 9, therefore is a must, although with the game being at Tynecastle, the task is that much harder.
So, all in all, the possibility of a make-or-break clash with St Johnstone at Dens becomes very real, remembering that the Muirton men have a home game against Motherwell as one of their remaining fixtures.
All this must be a big enough headache for manager Archie Knox. But he also has a long list or injured players to worry about. Albert Kidd, one of the few Dark Blues to play well on Wednesday against Celtic, was substituted in the second half because of an ankle injury. He must be doubtful for the Dons clash. The Ray Stephen, Lex Richardson, Bobbie Glennie and Iain MacDonald are also on the injured list and doubtful. And Cammy Fraser is, of course, suspended.
It will need a herculean effort from the remaining players over the next couple of weeks. At least a point from Aberdeen tomorrow would lift a great deal of the weight from his shoulders.

Waterfront Will Be Reinstated
Fears that part of the Barnhill waterfront may be left permanently scarred after work on the Dighty sewer outfall project has been completed, have been allayed by a spokesman for Tayside Regional Council.
"The works are of vital importance, but when they are finished, things will be put to rights" he commented.
A large area near Balmossie Brigge has been fence off and workmen are constructing a temporary rock embankment to allow work on the 2km pipeline which will pass through the site and stretch out into the Tay estuary.
The work is expected to be complete by the autumn and will cost £3.6 million.
