I remember a newspaper vendor called Johnny Croll who used to give us a few bob to deliver the telegraph to the industrial estate through the hole in the wall in Beechwood,we also used to collect empty lemonade bottles from the factories then take them to Margi McBains sweetie shop and receive a few pennies for them. Halcyon days indeed.
Kings Cross Road Childhood Work / Working Life Kevin Melville Beechwood Kirkton / Trottick Mon, 10 Mar 2014 16:13:22 +0000 fiona.christison 1198 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk Gas Explosion http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/reminiscences/gas-explosion
I recall getting off the bus at Kings Cross Road and walking along Dronley Place when suddenly there was a massive gas explosion behind me.

One of the tenements in Kings Cross Road had the front blown off. I felt like I had just experienced an earthquake as I walked home that day. It must have been about 1975 or slightly earlier.
Dronley Place Kings Cross Road Housing Beechboy Beechwood Fri, 26 Oct 2012 15:20:16 +0000 fiona.christison 1009 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk Beechwood Shops http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/reminiscences/beechwood-shops
I notice that there are virtually no shops in Beechwood now which made me think of the names/types of shops that thrived there in the 50s namely:

From left to right Mallow, Beechwood Stores, Andrew G Kidds, The Butchers, Johnston Stores, McBains or Mary's and lastly the chippers. Read more......
Shopping Alan Lamond Beechwood Wed, 25 Apr 2012 08:36:46 +0000 fiona.christison 943 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk Maureen's Life http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/reminiscences/maureens-life
I was born in 1946 in Lochee. My father had been unemployed for a few months and decided to go to Canada. Interviews were taking place in the Labour Exchange. When he saw the queues he was about to go home but saw a lady at a desk so asked about a job. 'I can get you one in Greenock' - so to Greenock we went - Mum, Dad, sister Anna and me & the baby (my wee sister was born in 1937. We stayed there until we were bombed out when Mum took us back to her Mum's in Dundee. Anna and I stayed with our grandparents until our Mum came back a year later. Read more......

Hepburn Street 1950's Childhood Work / Working Life Mary Beechwood Wed, 16 Mar 2011 14:42:07 +0000 lynne.davidson 710 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk Oh The Good Old Days http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/reminiscences/oh-good-old-days

I was born in Dundee, there were five in our family and we lived in a 2 roomed flat.
