We have very happy childhood memories of Dundee in the 50- 60s, sad to see the photos of Mid St knocked<br />down where a family lived with so much pride.</p> Mid Street 1950's Childhood Linda K Hilltown Thu, 29 Mar 2012 11:07:17 +0000 lynne.davidson 932 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk Memories of Dundee - Part Nine http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/reminiscences/memories-dundee-part-nine <div class="content clear-block"> <p><span class='wysiwyg_imageupload image imgupl_floating_right imgupl_styles_spacing_20_black_border\n\rBlack Border'><a href="http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/wysiwyg_imageupload_lightbox_preset/wysiwyg_imageupload/9/greens.png" rel="lightbox[wysiwyg_imageupload_inline]" title=""><img src="http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/medium/wysiwyg_imageupload/9/greens.png" alt="" title="" class="imagecache wysiwyg_imageupload imgupl_styles_spacing_20_black_border\n\rBlack Border imagecache imagecache-medium" style="" width="230" height="165" /></a> <span class='image_meta'></span></span>The coming of war brought many changes to our lives. However, I felt the very first impact of war, two day before it started. On the evening of 1st September 1939, the day Germany invaded Poland, a country whom we had pledged to help if they were attacked. I went to see a film about the Dionne Quintuplets, born to a French Canadian mother, who roused a lot of public interest at the time. When I came out of the cinema, I thought it was very dark, but I didn't realise that there were no street lights on. It wasn't until I got home that the truth was brought home to me. I assume this was the first ever blackout and I guess, a practice for that which would later become commonplace when war was declared two days later. I assume the Government was then resigned to the fact that war was inevitable.<span class="read-more"><a href="/reminiscences/memories-dundee-part-nine"><strong>&nbsp;Read more......</strong></a></span></p> </div> Mid Street 1939-1945 Childhood Cinema / Theatre War Years Walter Blacklaw Hilltown Wed, 30 Mar 2011 10:08:13 +0000 lynne.davidson 764 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk Bygone Ardler http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/reminiscences/bygone-ardler <div class="content clear-block"> <p><span class='wysiwyg_imageupload image imgupl_floating_right imgupl_styles_spacing_20_black_border\n\rBlack Border'><a href="http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/wysiwyg_imageupload_lightbox_preset/wysiwyg_imageupload/9/ardler_in053-047.png" rel="lightbox[wysiwyg_imageupload_inline]" title=""><img src="http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/medium/wysiwyg_imageupload/9/ardler_in053-047.png" alt="" title="" class="imagecache wysiwyg_imageupload imgupl_styles_spacing_20_black_border\n\rBlack Border imagecache imagecache-medium" style="" width="230" height="165" /></a> <span class='image_meta'></span></span>Was brought up in Mid Street and Constitution Road, before moving out to the new housing scheme at Ardler. We were one of the first families to move into Turnberry Avenue, and I attended Ardler Primary School, before it became overcrowded and they had to re-open the old Blackshade Primary.<span class="read-more"><a href="/reminiscences/bygone-ardler"><strong>&nbsp;Read more......</strong></a></span></p> </div> Constitution Street Mid Street Turnberry Avenue Housing David McLean Ardler Thu, 03 Mar 2011 14:31:13 +0000 lynne.davidson 598 at http://bygone.dundeecity.gov.uk
