I was born in 1924 in Castle Street, Broughty Ferry. I went to Eastern Primary School and then Grove Academy. I served my apprenticeship as a joiner with Suttie Brothers in Union Street, Broughty Ferry.
I was called up on 16th May 1944 and served with the RAF and was later transferred to the Army (Royal Warwickshire Regiment) just after D-Day when there was a need for more infantrymen.
I was taken to Huyton where I had my uniform changed from RAF to Army. Then I went to Northern Ireland to a place called Ballykinler, which is still an Army camp, to do my corps training. On completion of that I was posted to the Far East. The first place I was at was Dhulally in India to become acclimatised. I was there about three weeks and then went to Burma for jungle training.
