A Law Walk in Fancy Dress

High StreetA walking race to the top of the Law has been fixed for Saturday, October 22. Competitors will wear fancy dress, and the race will start and finish at Dundee Repertory Theatre. The race will be a wind-up to the gala week to be run by the Repertory Theatre Club with a view to focussing interest in the Rep., increasing membership and raising funds. Other activities will include dances, a whist drive and coffee morning. The race will be open to anyone and there will be prizes for costume as well as for the first three to finish.

Russian Look in Dundee

Our streets will bear a Russian look this winter - a t least at foot level. Shoe shops in the city are ready to unload the latest in female fashion - Cossack-style boots with raised heels and wide-necked tops that come halfway up the calf. Most likely colour the ladies will wear is white. And the price? From around sixty to eighty shillings.

The Dark Blues are Doing Us Proud

A big hand to Dundee!
Here we have the team with the football craft and power we have all been shouting about. They finished the League Cup section the only First Division team with full points from six games. And with the proud record of 23 goals against 2.

Can we ask for better?

Some will tell you that they were in an easy section. But were they? Aberdeen, Raith Rovers and Ayr United are a good cross section of what Dundee will meet all season. Motherwell are reckoned to be the best ball playing team in Scotland. Yet Ayr United went to Fir Park and drew 2-2. And we know what Dundee did to Ayr.

Before Saturday's game with Aberdeen I spoke to Dons officials. They felt their team was on the way up after their big win against Raith Rovers, and they raved about young in-side forward Cooke. Yet for only 20 minutes in the first half did the Dons match Dundee in outfield play and we didn't see much of this boy Cooke. The Dark Blues gave the Dons the run around and a lesson on how to finish.

I wouldn't say this was Alan Gilzean's best game, but he could stride through the opposition with ease. An Alan in top form will burst the best defences in the country. But he is just one part of the smooth-working Dundee machine.

Individually and collectively Dundee are about the most attractive side in the country. The link-up from goal out is good, all play at speed, and the quick pass - very few fail to get to the spot intended - opens up defences and presents scoring chances.

Aberdeen found that to their cost. They were beaten six times. We'll have no kick if we get this stuff throughout the season. Aberdeen are back at Dens Park again this afternoon. This time it is for a league game.

In Memory of Mary

It's amazing how much interest is being taken in the Mary Slessor Memorial Chapel which is being constructed at Wishart Memorial Church, Dundee.

Recently the minister, the Rev. T.W. Jarvis, appealed for a miniature organ for it, and got five offers from Birmingham, Newburgh, Arbroath, Invergowrie and Dundee.

The chapel is being made in a former spare room in the church, which has close links with Dundee's most famous missionary. Linen will have pride of place in the décor, because Mary was a flax weaver for about 14 years. Mr Jarvie has succeeded in obtaining some linen, woven in Baxter Bros & Co., Ltd., Dens Works, while she worked there. The women of the congregation are to embroider the material for use as a table drape. Linen will also be used as curtaining.

The church already had a collection of photographs showing Mary Slessor at work in the mission field. These are to be arranged round the walls of the chapel. A painting of Mary Slessor at her loom, with the Bible by her side is being painted by Mr Gregory Lange, a Polish refugee, who himself worked in local mills before he could get employment as an artist in Dundee.

M.P. Visits Kirkton High

Mr. G. M. Thomson, Socialist M.P. for Dundee East, on Tuesday visited Kirkton High School with Mr J.D. Collins, director of education. Mr Collins said the M.P. was looking particularly into staffing problems generally in the city. It was hoped that as a result of the visit something might be done to relieve the situation.
