Death of a Promising Athlete

Tally StreetMany in Dundee and elsewhere will learn with regret of the death of Constable Robert Cathro, one of the city's most promising young athletes.

While competing at Strathkiness games the deceased sustained a scratch with the spike of a shoe and blood poisoning supervened. Though unable to compete, he appeared at Dens Park on the occasion of the police sports, aided by staff, and watched with keen interest the various events.Subsequently his case became more serious and it was deemed advisable to have him removed to the Royal Infirmary, where every effort was put forth to alleviate his sufferings. He gradually sank, however and died early on Thursday. Mr Cathro who joined the force in 1902 was regarded as one of the up and coming Scottish Athletes, in heavy events, notably wrestling, he excelled and bade fair to equal performances of his better known brother Alexander.

As it was he proved a successful competitor at many Highland gatherings. Amongst his colleagues of the force he was much esteemed and to them especially the news of this tragic close to a career so full of promise will come as a heavy blow. Deceased who was 23 years of age, was only recently married.
