Swimming in October!

WellgateSummer in October, that’s the way it was at the weekend. Saturday’s weather was almost too good to be true and while Sunday and Monday were overcast, the temperature was still high enough for many outdoor activities.

Perhaps the most surprising was the spectacle of swimmers in the Tay at Broughty Ferry, at teatime at the fast. Along with sailboard and other water enthusiasts they provided a happy scene for passers-by and a late reminder of another summer that never was!

John W. Hazel

John W. Hazel was the man you could always count upon to settle an argument – especially when it came to sport or, that most-discussed topic of all in Dundee, our weather.

Diarist John, tragically found dead on the railway line near Invergowrie this week, was a meticulous keeper of detail in his renowned diaries. Aged 86, he had not been in good health. He will be missed around town by a host of people he proudly called his friends.

A former railwayman who, ironically, died after being stuck by a train so close to where he used to work as a signalman, Mr Hazel who is survived by his son, John, who confirmed that Dad’s famed diaries are to be kept in the family.
