Benefit Game at Lochee Park

On Monday morning Dundee are taking a team to Lochee Park to meet Harp in a benefit game for Mr Hugh Cameron, the popular park-keeper who is retiring.

The Dens Parkers will turn out a strong side, and the game should draw a good holiday crowd. The match should have taken place some time ago, but a storm vetoed it. It is to be hoped that better luck will favour the venture on this occasion.

The game is timed to start at 11 a.m. and Mr J.S. Yeaman, the well-known Dundee referee is expected to be in charge.

Dundee Works Strike Settled

A settlement was reached on Thursday at Seafield Works (Thomson, Shepherd £ Co., Ltd.), Taylor’s Lane Dundee.

The strike involved 28 employees – 14 spinners on the night shift and 14 on the day shift. On Thursday the day shift strikers returned to work as usual after dinner time and in the evening the night shift workers resumed. The latter had been idle for two nights and the former a day and a half.

As a result of the strike winders were also thrown idle, but these will now restart their usual duties.

Following the strike some 40 spinners, former employees at Seafield Works, were taken on and the establishment is now working to full capacity.

Police Boxes are Popular

Telephone operators at Dundee police headquarters are busier than ever. Chief Constable Neilans has reported to the Police Committee on Monday’s meeting that he has carefully considered the feasibility of reducing the number of operators and he is satisfied that any reducing would greatly impair the efficiency being maintained.

In April 1935, when the switchboard was first in operation, the number of outside calls was 1657. In July last it reached 2487. In addition daily duty calls from police officers numbered 651 in July and internal calls are estimated at between 500 and 750 daily.

In July 1935, The Scottish Office approved of an increase in the number of telephone operators from five to eight for a period of one year, intimating that the number would be subject to review.
Another Order for Caledon

The Caledon Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Dundee are to build a passenger-cargo motor ship of 3500 tons, deadweight for the General Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., London.

The new vessel will be of similar dimensions to the Philomel, delivered by the Caledon Company to the same owners early this year, but instead of being driven by steam she will be fitted with diesel machinery of the Sulzer type. The installation will be carried out at Dundee.

City’s Big Sports Day

Wednesday December, 2, will be a big day on Dundee’s sport calendar. The Scotland-Wales football international takes place at Dens Part on that day, and plans are now afoot to stage a big boxing show in the city in the evening.

Promoter George Grant’s offer for the Scots cruiser-weight title fight has been accepted by the Board of Control and that will top the bill.

In connection with this fight, Mr Grant points out that his successful purse offer was not £31 10s, but considerably in excess of that figure.

Should a suitable hall not be available for December 2 the show will go on Tuesday December 8, at the Caird Hall.
