A Shortcut through by Bain Square to Wellgate

Biggest change in the Cowgate in the past 25 years has undoubedly been the demolition of the north side of the street and the coming of the Wellgate Centre. Gone are such names as Style and Mantle, costumiers; Cowgate Sub Post Office run by Mr Swan.

D & A Winning, butchers; the RAF Recruiting Office; the Nat West Bank of Scotland office; and Miss Hodge, house furnishers, not forgetting Bain Square, used by hordes of youngsters coming from matinee performances at the Gaumont - now the Odeon - as a shortcut to the Wellgate.

Although the numbers crossing to and from the new Wellgate Centre are few, many motorists are commenting that the throngs which do cross at times remind them of old times when hundreds used to walk down the Wellgate and across to the Murraygate.
