New Industry in Dundee Blind Institution

Magdalen GreenAn important addition has just been made to the industrial trade carried on in the Institution for the Blind in the form of a new mat and matting installation. Three new loons have been added, with the most modern machinery for trimming and finishing. The latter are propelled by an electric motor. The increasing trade of the Institution has made this extension necessary and now mats of all kinds, including open, brush and wood bordered can by produced expeditously. It also affords employment to an additional number of blind artisans.

The Tay and Tyne

The splendid steamer Tay and Tyne, built by the Dundee Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., to the order of the Dundee and Newcastle Shipping Company, Ltd., was launched on Monday. The new vessel is of the same type as the Company’s Alderney, which vessel the Tay and Tyne is to replace, and her dimensions are:-

Length 180 feet; breadth 26 feet; depth 13 feet 3 inches. She is about 550 tons gross, while accommodation has been provided for 39 first-class passengers. The vessel has been fitted with all the latest appliances for the rapid handling of cargo, while she will be capable of getting up to a speed of 11 to 12 knots per hour.

Free Dinners for the Hungry

Mr D. Wallace, St Clement’s Lane, has kindly offered to the Distress Committee to supply free dinners to 50 of the children in the city who may be affected by the prevailing unemployment. The offer has been accepted by the Committee, and will be of immense benefit to them in the work of relieving distress.

Short Time Extending

Lindsay Street Works, Dundee (Messrs John Henderson and Sons), yesterday went on short time. The works closed at 6pm and will not open again until Tuesday morning, this being the arrangement announced until further notice.
