Biggest Jazz Festival Yet

Dundee’s latest jazz festival to be held at the Rep Theatre between June 3 and 6 is the biggest yet.

The main draw will be saxophone player Courtney Pine, who has taken the music scene by storm over the last few months. Only 23, London-born Pine’s latest album, “Journey to the Urge Within” – has so far outsold any other jazz record in the UK.His music is not to everyone’s taste, but with his roots firmly planted in the hard-bop style of Coltrane and Rollins, Pine and his quartet should not be missed.

Another “home grown” visitor to Dundee will be Edinburgh sax man Tommy Smith. Now based in the States, Tommy will be bringing his three companions who make up the “Forward Motion” – all graduates of the Berklee College of Music.

Smith and Pine will be sharing the bill on the opening night.

No Scottish jazz festival would be complete without the presence of Carol Kidd, the lass who began her singing career belting out pop tunes in her Glasgow close, and she will be at the Rep on June 4 along with brass men Roy Williams and John Barnes.

Coming up on the 5th is ex-busker Ted Hawkins- a bluesman’s blues man. The 50-year-old Mississippi guitarist was found wandering about on a California beach by a record producer. He was brought to the UK and has never looked back.

Ted plays everything from blues to gospel, taking in pop and rhythm and blues on they way. He has to be heard live to be believed.

Supporting Ted on the 5th will be the man they can’t silence – Tam White from Edinburgh. Tam actually retired some years ago from the rhythm and blues scene, but along with his band, the Dexters, was coaxed back into the limelight. Non-jazz fans will recognise his voice as that of Robbie Coltrane in the TV series “Tutti Frutti” He will be accompanied by guitarist Jim Condie.

The festival officially closes on the 6th with an evening with the Stan Tracey Orchestra. Stan has been on the scene for more years than he cares to remember as a pianist and composer – and, with current financial restraints, Dundee is lucky to have him fronting a full orchestra.

Tickets for all performances cost £5 and are available from the Rep.

Gwen Hardie Exhibition

Dundee’s Seagate Gallery plays host from Saturday to one of Scotland’s most promising painters, Gwen Hardie, who is one of a new breed of “Artists in Exile”.

Former Edinburgh student Gwen Hardie has been living and working in West Berlin since 1984. The exhibition of her large-scale colour paintings runs until June 23.

Hi-tech Equipment is Put on Show

NCR, The major computer company has put some of the latest hi-tech equipment on show in the recently refurbished NCR House, Roseburn Gardens, Edinburgh.

NCR is well known for the cash dispensers produced at Gourdie plane, Dundee. Although NCR has bases in 50 countries, Dundee is its sole producers of cash dispensers for the world.

But local authorities are among the main users, too with NCR computer systems being used by many councils in Scotland for rates, payroll and personnel etc. Both Tayside Region and Dundee District have been leading the way with sophisticated systems.

One of the pieces of software at the exhibition is a joint effort by NCR and Dundee District – a system for receipting rent payments, which has been in operation all over Dundee for about a year.

The good news is that with the popularity of the cash dispensing machines, the Dundee plant is expanding with more job openings in the offing.

Hectic Time Ahead for Liz

Commonwealth 10,000m championship Liz Lynch faces a hectic schedule of globetrotting and racing as she builds towards the World Athletic Championships in Rome in September.

The Whitfield girl’s preparations for her bid to add the world title to the Commonwealth Games gold she won in such memorable fashion last summer, involve running over middle distances, stepping-up gradually towards 10km.

“I need to start getting faster over short distances them take the speed up with me to 10,000m,” explained Liz yesterday.

The Dundee athlete finished second in the UK 1500m championship at the weekend in a personal best time and reckons she can run even faster over that distance.

Liz has mapped out her plan of campaign and it doesn’t include two of the summer’s top events.

She was selected for the Europa Cup 10,000m (June 27) but has declined as it doesn’t fir in with her plans and she also intends missing the World Student Games in Yugoslavia (July 9-20) as her coach feels other possible engagements around that time might be more beneficial.

The Lynch Summer Schedule reads:

June 7 – Moscow and a top class 1500m race against the best of the Eastern Block athletes.

June 13 – Gateshead for a G.B. v Canada v Poland international or possibly an international meet in Scotland, racing over 1500m the same weekend.

June 17 – Florence and a 1500m invitation race.

July 2 – Helsinki and a 3000m race, although there is a question mark over this race as she has also been invited to participate in a 1500m in Oslo two days later and preference is for the latter.

July 10 – Crystal Palace and a mile event as the Talbot Games.

July 20 – Belfast Games and a 3000m event.

July 15 – Stockholm over 3000m.

August 19 – Zurich where she’ll run over 5000m for this first time.

“Zurich will be my only races during the month proceeding the world championships” revealed Liz. “For four weeks I’ll be concentrating on solid training using the run in Switzerland as an indicator of the kind of shape I’m in”.

No Royal Launch

A hoped for royal launch of Dundee’s proposed waterfront development by the Queen during her visit to Dundee on July 1 will definitely not take place.

Dundee District Council’s chief executive James Hoey, revealing details of the royal itinerary yesterday, said a visit to the controversial waterfront site was not included.

Last month the council’s planning and development committee was told the Queen and Prince Philip’s programme would include a ceremony to mark the start of the proposed showpiece waterfront development, to include a heritage centre.

Indications are the development would not have been ready to start by July 1.

Arriving in Dundee by train the royal couple will unveil an inscribed granite stone to formally mark the opening of the city’s Technology Park, before officially opening the W.L. Gore factory at the park.

A visit to the Wester Gourdie industrial estate to open the Bonar Carelle factory will be followed by a lunch at City Chambers.

The Queen will then visit Captain Scott’s Discovery and Prince Philip will board the Unicorn.

Progress of the waterfront scheme is somewhat stagnant pending submission of detailed plans to Dundee District Council. It is understood however, these plans may be submitted within the next couple of weeks.

Dundee Moslem’s Celebration

It was back to normal eating hours for the majority of Dundee’s Moslem community yesterday as four weeks of fasting came to an end.

At least 1000 Moslems from both the Hilltown Mosque and the Wellington Street Mosque celebrated Eid-Ul-Fitar, the end of Ramadan.

During the four weeks of Ramadan those taking part in the fasting are only allowed to eat occasionally during the late evening.

Yesterday’s celebrations brought an end to the fastings with a sense of occasion very similar to that of our Christmas.

Mr Mohammed Yakub Quadar, a member of the Wellington Street Mosque, explained that Eid-Ul-Fitar is a public holiday for the Moslem community. A morning of prayer is followed by celebrations that last the rest of the day.
