Polio Vaccine To Spare In Dundee

High StreetVaccinations against polio will start in Dundee on Monday morning. Enough vaccine arrived at the Public Health Office this morning to give a first dose to 517 children, whose parents have consented to the vaccination.Only children born in November in each of the years from 1947 to 1954 or March in the years 1951 to 1954 will be treated from this consignment. This was a Government decision.

Dr Ian B.L. Weir, Medical Officer of Health in Dundee told the "Evening Telegraph" that the number of children who registered for the treatment represents about 18 to 20 percent of those eligible. The average for Scotland is 50 percent.

The same children will probably be given a second injection in a month.

A surplus of the vaccine - enough for 27 injections - will be given to a reserve group of children born in August 1947 - 1954.
