Another Polio Case in Dundee

Another case of polio in Dundee has been confirmed a girl at Mid Craigie. This brings the number of confirmed polio cases in Dundee to 12.

At two o’clock this afternoon the doors of the clinic in Forester Street, were open for polio vaccine. A queue of over 100 people were standing in the sunlight outside waiting patiently for their “sweeties”. Fathers carrying babies, and mothers with toddlers and friends looking after other people’s children stood three to four deep on the pavement.

Members of the Health Department staff, armed with a sheaf of yellow cards, made their way down the queue filling in particulars of those receiving the vaccine.

As the “patients” were let inside in batches of half a dozen, others joined the end of the queue.

“This is definitely more than we expected” said one official, “but we are keeping on top of the queue.

Queues also formed at West March, Kirkton.

From the clinic in Balmoral Avenue, Douglas, which opened at 10 a.m., it was reported that only “slightly more than usual” were in attendance for the polio immunisation.

Tonight from 6.30 to eight, a special clinic will be opened in Fintry Church Hall.

Bargain Hunters out in Dundee

After a fairly slow start, business gathered momentum at the Summer Sale of the Reform Street, Dundee branch of Messrs Caird & Sons, which opened this morning.

Greatest bargains and the ones that went first – were in the window – blouses, skirts and dresses reduced to near give away prices.

Cotton frocks were going for £3, lambs wool twin sets for 55s, lumber jackets for £1 and silk suites for as little as four guineas.

Foundation garments were halved in price, children’s coat and suits were selling from £2, and ladies with an eye for fashion were buying hats for 10s a time.

The sale in the main shop will take place later in the summer.

Dundee Looks to America for New Industries

Important announcements were made this afternoon by the president of Dundee Chamber of Commerce, Mr H. B. Pirie, concerning the search for more jobs for the city, and a satisfactory air service for its industrial and business community.

Speaking at the chamber’s quarterly meeting, Mr Pirie said Dundee had to find new jobs for 3000 people in the next two to three years. Lord Provost McManus and he provisionally intend to visit the US in October as ambassadors to seek new industries.

Regarding an air service, the president said the Chamber would welcome a chance to meet BEA. He said he would hazard a guess that a developing industrial area like Dundee might be prepared to meet the charge that would be necessary to provide a feeder service on the short run to the main line service from Renfrew.

Mr Pirie said the result of the survey carried out at the instigation of the Lord Provost’s Industrial Committee at the end of 1960 was that the 3000 new jobs would be necessary. It had been remitted to the Lord Provost and himself to explore all possible avenues of attracting new industry and to support every endeavour to develop present and diversify older established industries.
