Wallace Foundry to Reopen

Wallace Foundry, which has been closed down for some five years, is to be reopened. It is not yet known when a definite start is be made.

Wallace Foundry is a branch of the firm of Urqhart, Lindsay & Robertson Orchar, Ltd. An official of the firm stated they were meantime employing about a dozen men in tidying up and getting the place ready for reopening. He could not say definitely when the foundry would be actually opened, but he admitted that they were undoubtedly making preparations.

Office Letter-Box Pilfered

Dundee detectives are investigating a complaint of interference with the letter box in the outer door of a solicitor’s office in the centre of the city. It is impossible to say how many letters taken contained cash or anything valuable.

The ingenious method adopted was to stuff a newspaper into the letter-box, so as to prevent the letters from falling, thus enabling the thief of thieves to insert a hand far enough to get hold of the correspondence. Apparently the box was rifled after the postman had delivered the morning mail.

There was a minor epidemic of this type of pilfering in the city towards the end of last year, but the present case is the first of its kind which has been reported since then.

Strikers’ Jobs Filled

Business as usual in factories

Business was being carried on normally in all wholesale furniture factories yesterday. The places of strikers are being filled. This has followed a decision by the Scottish Furniture Manufacturers’ Association to take no action for a settlement of the dispute.

The operatives claim an increase of 1d per hour in time rates and five per cent in piecework rates.

Campers to Pay Rent

Camping sites at Broughty Ferry and at Riverside Park are to be granted subject to a charge. This was agreed at a meeting of a Parks Sub-Committee of Dundee Town Council. The suggested charges for a tent for four persons at Broughty Ferry are 10s per week or 1s 6d per night and at Riverside Park the charges will be 5s per week or 1s 6d per night. Treasurer Reid said he favoured the idea, not because of the revenue, but because it would give the Corporation some control over the campers.
